I work for a dentist who came here from Russia 14 years ago. I asked him why Russia did not accept help right away. He said:

Russia likes it's secrets. Here, you worry about 1 person, there they don't worry about a thousand persons. The only people who worry about the 1 person are the mothers...

There are several high-ranking officers of their navy on that boat, some with opinions which are contradictory to certain other individuals in Russian government, who want to be sure they do not get out alive.

A long time I heard this parable/story (?) and it's stayed with me ever since. Kind of like the scopion and the turtle.

A genie comes down to a Russian farmer and tells him he will grant him one wish. But, the genie says, whatever you wish for, I will give your neighbor twice as much.

The Russian farmer thought for a bit and said, I've got it: Make me blind in one eye.
