You might also look at books on conventional photography & lighting at the local camera shop or online... Light still travels in straight lines for digital... Well, until reflected, refracted, etc... :-)

It seems to me that perhaps the least valued contribution made by digital imaging is that it's shown most of us just how poorly lighted the "caves" we live in are... :-)

I think one of the advantages offered by digital is it's ease of use across different color temperatures. With film you either have to purchase the correct film (tungsten or daylight) or use fairly heavy filtration to correct.
Digital camera's ability to white ballance well in any reasonably consistent color temperature (measured in degrees Kelvin) is a little north of handy.
I purchased a set of very nice lights (Colortran Mini-Pro) on eBay and am just gobsmacked with my ability to keep my cave well-lit - :o)...
