What is abstraction in relation to photography?. Are you supposed to still represent a subject but totally disguise what it is? Examples would be helpful

See if you can find any photos by Aaron Siskind on the net. He's the man for photo abstraction. But some of the early work of Strand fits in that category too--such as his picket fence photo.

Also look at Ralph Gibson's work. His use of high contrast and composition might be thought of as abstraction, though his subjects are (mostly) recongnizable.
