Everything's relevant I guess... (Coping with the weather)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Here in North Texas we've gone without a drop of rain since early last June and the temperature has been over 100 44 days during that time. Over the weekend the high temperatures were 109 to 111 Monday. Well, yesterday the high temperature was only 97 and people were acting completely different. People were picnicing in the park, jogging, more friendly and just generally more active like they would be the first cool crisp day of the fall. I might add, there really is a big difference in 97 and 105 or hotter. Something happens to people when it gets that hot and especially if it stays that hot for awyile. We had low temps. in the 80s. Well, that's great, but we still need rain.

Here in Cleveland, the temperature dipped into the low 50's. We have a guest from Phoenix and his lips are turning blue. :)

Say Joe,

In your private response, you mentioned you watered the plants every day, but they still burned up.

I was always told that on hot days you wait until the evening to water, because the water evaporating from a plant on a hot day will get worse when the plant is wet. But then, maybe it's just too d*mn hot, PERIOD. Any insights on this one?

You're right about the watering. We water at night or real early in the morning. If you put water on a plant when the hot sun is beating down on the plant and the temp.is hot, the leaves just turn brown from scorching. When I said I watered every day, I meant daily, not during the heat of the day. It was just too hot. All of my tougher plants that are native to this area survived, but some of the more tender plants just burned up from the heat.

Joe, I just read your post and was wondering approximately where in N TX you lived? I live about 30 miles north of Houston, but bought some land a few months ago in a little place--not even a town there--- called Brad, west of Mineral Wells on 180. Maybe we're sort of neighbors? I have a friend who lives at Possum Kingdom Lake and she said it was really bad there, but the lake wasn't down as far as she thought it was going to be. Bye for now!

Along these same lines with the heat and no rain, is fire. We are north of Houston, Cleveland had a 4000 acre fire and south of that in New Caney another fire. Now we see that there is fire in Kerrville. The Cleveland fire (being our address is Cleveland) was just a little to close to home. How many of you have really thought about what you would do with your stock and family during an evacuation? This Labor day weekend was very scary but at least it got us talking about what we would do. We will be aggressively cutting our trees away from our property lines, was a little sickening to find out that our front trees touch treetops with trees that extend into the hundreds of acre's of National Forest around us. I will never complain again about not being able to breath outside when the forestry burns the underbrush! Vicki

We've had a lot of fairly large prairie fires around here too. and Hannah, we will be almost neighbors. I live in southern Wise County. I'm about 45 miles, I guess, east of Brad but in Texas that's neighbors. I've been in that area many times and I envy you. It's beautiful around there.

Hi Joe. I saw on the news about a week and a half ago that there was a big grass fire in Palo Pinto county, which is where my land is, and I called my friend at PK to see where exactly it was, but it wasn't nearby. It was in Strawn, which is down 16, I think.

I think I got a nice piece of land throught the Texas Veterans Land Board, payments are great. It's right on 180, which I debated, but think it will be nice if I decide to move my business up there. It's a little rocky and cedary (what else!!) but it has a couple of places I think I can make a decent garden patch. If that fails, I can plant on my friend's place at PK. Bye for now!
