I'm looking for name of the breed of chicken that lays a dark brown (almost chocolate color) egg. I think it is of french origin.

I don't have an answer for you, but have you tried contacting someone at Murray McMurray hatchery? They're really expert at those kinds of questions, and may have an answer for you. If you find out, please let us know as I"d like to have a few of those myself!!!

One breed that I've heard of is a Maran. They are hard to find, though. RarePoultryBreeders2 is an e-groups discussion list that should be able to help you find what you are looking for.Good luck,
