I was just curious who sang "sand and water" in the second episode of ER's new season. I just heard it tonight and was intrigued by the voice that sang that song. Thanks. :)

I believe Beth Nielsen Chapman sings that song. She's a country singer, and wrote that song after the death of her husband.

The whole cd "Sand and Water" deals with the loss of her husband to cancer and her working through the grief process. He also left behind a young son. Anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one will be touched by the honesty and poignancy of her lyrics. I discovered this song after the death of my grandmother and it always had me in tears, yet was comforting at the same time. Chapman is known mostly for her songwriting and has written numerous hits for artists like Faith Hill and Martina McBride, but her own voice is excellent. I saw her perform a few years back and she needs no producing to make her voice sound good. Check out her music - Elton John is also a fan of hers.

There was a post in another thread (prior to the airing of this epi) wondering about the title. I guess now we know. I used to live in Nashville and remember reading in the newspaper about Beth, her late husband, and the song but had never heard it. BTW, I liked the way they weaved the song and stories together.

I thought that "sand and water" may be a reference to Deb saying "one week turned into a month..." time passed very fast for her, like sand or water in her hands. The same for the couple with the premature baby, they were "allowed" to have him for too little time.

Slightly off-topic, but it addresses Beth Nielsen Chapman and her range of work. I believe she is the one that wrote Faith Hill's hit "This Kiss."

I remember hearing this song on the radio a couple of years ago, and I love it. It was also used in "Providence" and "Charmed." Does anyone know where I can fid it on-line? Thanks so much!

The name of the CD is also called Sand and Water, but I think this song is also on her greatest hits album. I've listened to this song a couple times (I own the CD), and I think I have a better understanding why TPTB named the episode after her song. It fits so perfectly.

Well ER is definitely doing something right with the music these days...all of these songs fit in so well and make the scenes even more emotional. Am I wrong or have they started to do that more in the past year or so? (besides for parties or special occasions)

I like it when they name an ER epi after a song ("Sand and Water") or a poem ("The Peace of Wild Things"). Such Sweet Sorrow (yes, I know where that comes from) could have been "Taking You Home," except it would have given away the ending! :)

I first heard it on ER. I had to find out who sang it. Since then I've played it to my pupils and discussed the lyrics before telling them the background to it. Inevitably it made some think more than others but I know for a few it touched them.
