I can still see the old gentleman a settin/layin in his easy chair. He just never set straight up in a good posture--he always kinda layed down while restin and talkin. He usually had a stump of a cigar he would smoke and at other times would be kinda chewin his glasses leg. A retired school teacher and a lifelong bachlor, he was one of the finest men I ever knew. He was also a deacon at the little country Baptist church we went to. Very knowlegable in the Word and always taught Sunday School class as far back as I could remember. He was one of the reasons I trusted Jesus Christ for my Salvation. He was a Godly man yet very common and ordinary. He didn't have to "put on airs" with anybody. Everybody loved the old dude. I can't remember just when he died but it was in the mid to late 60's as I recall. After church sometimes, pap would invite'm down home for Sunday fried chicken dinner---or beef roast---or turkey or whatever we were havin. He was always delighted to come visit with us and we were always honored to have him. Sunday afternoons were always filled when Rube came down for dinner. He'd keep us entertained most of the afternoon with his stories of his younger days and how ornery he was. He didn't do mean things but rather just ornery things that most country boys did. I'd like to know just how many people he led to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. I'll bet it was a bunch! I know I'm thankful for knowing him. I just hope I can have a witness half as effective as his! Rest in peace Ruben--you deserve it! Matt. 24:44
