International Farmall "H". [stories]

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

John is S. Indiana's post got me to thinkin about the "H". I have pap's old H International. It's settin in the edge of the barnyard waitin until I can get it inside and work on't. Pap traded for it in the 50's and it's been a dandy. The engine was worn and shortly after gettin it-pap and a brother overhauled it with Super H stuff. It's a 41 model and had been used in the loggin business before it came to our house. A rather sizable "patch" in bolted on the left side of the engine right under the Govenour box. A rod had been thrown thru the engine block-hence the patch. A heavy 1/4" plate steel, formed to the contour of the block was maticulously drilled, tapped and bolted to form a oil and water tight seal. Those old dudes do have a high center of gravity and will tip over rather easily but if one's farmin with'm you're outta the dirt and dust more by settin high. The rear tires are rotted on "Ole Pap" and needs to be replaced-makin it look so forlorn just a settin there. Lil Dumplin took a picture of it this summer and entered it in a local photo contest and won 1st place! Maybe this winter I can get it inside the shop and fire it up again. Sure would be nice to have "ole Pap" runnin again! A neighbor of ole Jeeps has an H and was askin how you know the year of manufacture. Jeep told'm to look at the serial number and where it was located. Nabe had driven it up to Jeeps house and then slowly moseyed over to the tractor, looked at the number and hollered out: Well, I'll be a SOB, it's made in 1848! I didn't know they had hydrolics back then!" We still get a kick outta that-and nobody ever told'm any different either. Matt. 24:44

If someone has an old tractor, I may be able to tell them where to look for the serial number. From it, I can likely provide year of manufacture. I need to know make and model. Helps to know the manufacture year when looking for parts.

I am a borderline farmall freak, have 3, cub,H, M. My wife says the only reason that I want to be a farmer is then I will have a reason to have them. My son likes John Deere, where did I go wrong

Tom, To muse..It could be the hybred genetics of other half..Ms Greenpaint CostTa Lotta..

My Dad had the Farmall in John Deere country and yes we kids took a bit of teasing.

However, A Ford Implement dealer came to town and one summer we had a County fair and The Circus arrived with the Elephants..Yeah pretty ladies too..Whats a country boy..

John Deere dealer had the Elephant hitch to the drawbar. Pitting mass of Elephant to tractor. Needless to say old Elephant lean into that tractor and the driver pull down gas. The tractor dug in a hole and it was a even draw.. John Deere dealer was proud..

Enter the New Ford dealer..A few words were exchanged and the challenge accepted..The word quickly spread and the crowd grathered to watch this amazing feat.

A little 9N Ford and big high wheel John Deere hooked tight back to back. Off they went with the John Deere taking the little Ford to the other in of field and then..

Ford Dealer push down the hydrolic lever and up came the John Deere just enough it lost traction. Took that John Deere tractor all over the grounds.

My,My; Big fist fight after which was a good show to. Needless to say this is FORD country ever since. JR

I had a super H and it about killed me. they sure wern't made for the hills, although I used to take her places most folks wouldn't walk. She had good power and she was able to really lug hard. I guess my real complaint with her was the brakes. Very little and the brakes she had took alot of pressure to work, and this was after I changed the disk. I gave what was left of her to my brother to rebuild and his place is a lot flatter than mine. I went and bought a SU4000 which is a lot lower to the ground and it has BRAKES. :) Richard Miller
