dog smells

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We have a golden retriever, about 2 years old who has the worst problem with gas. We have tried changing dog brands, (doesn't matter if it is the expensive ones or the cheap ones; nor rice ones...) and he still blasts us out of the house!! We are afraid to light a match!! I need some remedies from you guys before hubby pitches Buddy in the compost!! We don't feed him "people food" because this makes it worse....any suggestions would be appreciated! Blessings, Sissy

When was the last time he was wormed ? You can give him some charcol pills .I would feed a good chicken and rice food for at least a month and see if that helps .Stick to the same brand don't keep switching .

Maybe try putting a little baking soda in his food, works for people.

We had that problem once with one of our dogs. Dad got so mad he cut a hole in the garage door, this was attached to the house, and he made that dog sleep with his butt laying in the garage. Damnist thing I ever saw. But then dad loved that dog more than ma.

Frequently caused by too much food or too high of a protein percentage. Cut the protein to about 20 to 21 percent, and if the dog is AT ALL overweight, cut him back. I know goldens tend toward obesity, so they usually can't be free-fed. If you can't easily feel all of his ribs, he's too fat. Good luck!

We have a Bulldog, the worst offender there could possibly be. Be sure to check the contents of the kibble. Never give soy products to a gas-powered dog. Soy does the same thing to humans, especially when first introduced into the diet. But dogs don't seem to get over it. Not to be gross, but our dog will jump up out of a sound sleep, spin around and look behind her to see where the intruder is. Good for a laugh, but then you gag.

I have heard it is from to much air from gulping food; read somewere that a ball put in the food dish would slow them down [ have to pick around the ball] and help. Tried it on my dog and worked.

Solid Gold has a product called D-Zymes, digestive enzymes that help to reduce gas. let me know if you want to try it and I'll find out where you can get some. Also peppermint aids digestion

Our dog stays outside, but we sure learned not to squeeze a couple of the cats when we pick them up.
