We have an entire category for Zone System posts. You should look at the old posts and see if you don't find some of the answers you are seeking there. It is a complicated subject, and the best advice you will receive is to buy a book or two on the subject and start reading, because it cannot be explained in a few brief paragraphs.

MY DEAR! ZONE SYSTEM DO NOT WORKS WELL (ESPECIALY WITH 35mm FILM). YOU CAN LEARN ALL ABOUT THAT AND WHAT THEN. ARE YOU READY TO SPEND C.$2000(US) OR MORE FOR DENSITOMETER? ARE YOU READY TO SPEND 1/2 OF YOUR "PHOTO" TIME FOR EQUIPMENT TESTING (AGAIN AND AGAIN)? ... IF ANY ANSWER IS NO DO NOT SPEND TIME WITH THE ZONE SYSTEM. ACTUALY YOU CAN LEARN ABOUT THAT IF YOU ARE SATISFIED JUST TO KNOW ABOUT THAT, BUT NOT TO WORK WITH THAT. ZONE SYSTEM IS SYSTEM OF FILM EXPOSURE (HOW TO CHOOSE EXPOSURE TIME AND LENS OPENING) TO GET ON PRINT WHAT YOU WANT (IN ADVANCE).

The Zone System was created by Ansel Adams to teach B&W exposure technique. It is very simple and makes a lot of sense. It works best for sheet film because that allows contrast control via development of individual exposures. I use the concepts consistently and intuitively with my 6x6 Rolleiflex TLR. There is a book by Adams called "The Negative" that explains the Zone System. It is easy reading.

If you are interested in the zone system, you might take a look at the new version on www.vsta.com/~alrob.
