Local adventure racers have been showing up at local O' events ... maybe it is time for OKers to have a try at an "adventure race." Here is an announcement for an up-coming local training event.

BLACK OPS CHALLENGE #4: SATURDAY, JAN 27, 2001, SHAWNEE MISSION PARK.

Listen up adventurers, you have been chosen to test your mettle. No money required, no assistance, no insurance, no permits, no one to save your ass but you!

By agreeing to take on this mission understand that: YOU AUTOMATICALLY ASSUME ALL RISK AND RESPONSIBILITY AND THAT YOU ALONE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING THAT MAY RESULT DURING THIS CHALLENGE. IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO BE 100% RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RESULTS, DO NOT DO THIS.

The course will be designed for completion in 4-6 hours. Expect 12-18 miles of mountain biking, 6-10 miles of trekking, and a special test or two. Navigation skills will be required for the trekking leg. Don't be intimidated, if you are not ready to do the whole course, come out and do some of it!

Preferred team format is coed teams of two or more, but solo competitors also welcome. The following equipment is suggested (nothing is required, you can make your own decisions): mountain bike, helmet, back pack, compass, pen, watch, fleece pullover, poncho, water, snacks.

The starting location will be at the big shelter near the Shawnee Mission Park Marina Parking Lot (on the North side of the Lake). The race will begin at 9 AM sharp. Each team must provide its own orienteering map of Shawnee Mission Park. They can be purchased for a few bucks at the park office.

I take "No money required" to mean there is no entry fee.

It is being organized by the KC Adventure Racing Club. As far as I can tell, the club is a loose knit group of local adventure racers (no formal dues or memberships, for example). They've got a discussion on the web through egroups. I think all you need to do to become a member is send an email to subscribe to the egroup (you can subscribe via email or just read the messages on the web) to:
