Clogged line, pump blamed in sewage spills A staff report

Two sewage spills occurred this week, one in Hope Mills and another at Pope Air Force Base.

About 1,000 gallons of sewage was spilled in each case.

The Hope Mills spill occurred off Lakeview Road on Thursday when sewage from a line clogged with grease backed up through a manhole, according to the Public Works Commission. The sewage spilled into a storm drain.

The spill was discovered around 3 p.m. Carolyn Hinson, PWC spokeswoman, said the sewage did not reach Hope Mills Lake. The storm drain flows into a small stream behind the lake off Lakeview Road.

PWC workers will block off Lakeview Road on Monday to clean the sewer lines in that area, Hinson said.

Sewage from Pope Air Force Base spilled into Young’s Lake in the Woodland Heights housing area on Tuesday evening, Air Force officials said on Thursday.

The spill happened at about 7:45 p.m. as a result of an equipment failure at a pumping station at the Air Force base.

Pope personnel repaired the equipment, officials said.

The spill area was cleaned of debris, and lime was applied to neutralize threats to health and the environment.

Pope officials said the pump is being monitored closely to prevent another spill.
