Hi I have a question for you all. I have just had a litter of pups. I would like to keep one, but due to $$$ I will need to keep the one that is the least expensive to Spay or Nueter. I would like to know if and/or why you can or can not use a elastasor or banding devise on dogs (males of course). Okay, I know someone out there has this answer. Thanks, Karole

I did it to two tomcats. Worked great on one, but not on the other. I think that was the fault of myself and helper in not getting the band far enough under the scrotum. I do it to newborn calves and they don't seem to have any significant problems. In my opinion, at worst you would have to take him into the vet for a repair job. Just make sure both testicles are in the band and the band is slid as close to the body as possible while pulling on the testicles.

No, don't try it! Dogs are NOT the same as cats. I have done cats beforevery easiy, but the dog that I tried to band chewed his scrotum off in an effort to get the band off, and bled to death. It was a mess and I don't recommend it.

I believe that it is less expensive to have a dog castrated than to have a bitch spayed. In case you haven't thought of this, you could see if there are any low-cost neutering clinics held in your area or through your local humane society.

Either find a farmer who does pigs, or read up and learn to do it yourself, it isn't very hard. I did a 2 year old Pyr. He had to wear and elizabethan collar since he would have chewed off the rubber band. It worked like a charm, and yes he was in pain for a few hours, make sure you get both testicles, and shave the area so it is eaiser to keep clean. Don't get talked into the notion that they must be a certain age, all 6 week old pups at shelters are castrated and or spayed before they leave the shelters. Vaccinate! But bravo that you are going to spay or neuter, how about doing the whole litter and MOM instead of just the one you are keeping? Vicki

PLEASE DON'T BAND THE PUPPY! IT CAN CAUSE THE PUYPPY TO CHEW AND CLAW AT BAND AND CAN HEMMORHAGE AND BLEED TO DEATH! I have known several dogs to do this . Its a simple procedure at the vets and is usually in and out the same day. Ask your vet if you can pay a little at a time, if necessary . I barter a lot with ours....he likes lamb, fresh eggs and honey and his wife likes to knit( I have wool yarn from our sheep)

You can try contacting your humane society. Here in Killeen TX. they every so often get special rates. As in 5 cents they call it nickel nueter They do it once or twice a year. And it Can not get much less expensive that. Or is there a vet. school near by ? Well good luck.

It will work just fine as long as you do like Ken says, make sure it's high and that both nuts are there. If your stupid enough to watch your dog chew his things off then you wern't made to own a dog anyway. You can always put a muzzle on your dog and quess what, he can't chew.

If you don't have the $ to have it spayed/neutered, where are you going to find the $ for shots? Just because someone WANTS a dog doesn't mean they can have one. It takes $ to properly care for any animal. It may be a good idea to wait.

Shots are cheap I do my own ,and rabies clinics are free.To get a dog fixed in my area is at least $65.oo.I have worked for a vet and that is alot of money for doing a male !There are no low cost programs I checked . Band the pup or have a local farmer do it.If you can provide a good home with love and food go for it .It is not easy to find homes for mixed breeds .

So instead of giving the advice Jennifer, we should have told Karole to just leave this whole litter unspayed and unneutered. This way they could have hundreds of more puppies to end up in shelters to be killed. Not spaying and neutering is brutal. Finding alternative ways of dealing with the unexpected pregnancy, cheaply fixing the pups, giving our own shots, now that is just plain smart. Instead of your rant, what advice would you have given?
