Snow in TN!!!greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
Hi everyone! We have snow in TN! It wouldn't be so bad if they treated the roads. I moved from New England so I was use to snow,we went everywhere, but I wasn't prepared for the roads here. I met the highway trucks yesterday. They scraped the road with the plow, BUT did not put down ANY salt or SAND. Now it is nothing but Ice! They Never put sand on a road down here. I've been here 7yrs. think I'd get use to it. My son wants to move back to the North East, NY or Maine, he's 19yrs now. I told him in 2yrs we would. Any suggestions!!

Talk to your highway dept - I live in Middle Tn - they put down salt and sand regularly. Maybe your dept is not buying it - it can get expensive - some cities and towns may not be able to afford it. Hang in there - Tennessee is a good place to live.

And cold. My indoor therm. only goes down to 10 degrees. Put it outside and the mercury went below that. Went out to feed the herd this morning and found the round bales frozen to the ground. Had to ram them with the truck first. Garage/workshop door was frozen shut when I went out to feed the cats. Had an out-of-season calf born about a week ago (t-total surprise). However, it seems to be doing fine.

I live in Watertown, TN and love it. Right now my husband, three children and I are all sleeping in the living room around the heater to keep warm at night. The kids think it's an all-month sleeping party. I was wondering where in TN you live. Watertown has less than 2000 people and we salt our main roads. I live outside the city limits on a gravel road; so without four wheel drive and a very heavy truck you get nowhere. The animals seem to be handling it fine. we just have to thaw out the water several times a day.

I live in North East TN in Tazewell. It's near the Cumberland Gap. My son tried to push a bale with our jeep and it tried to climb it! Frozen doors on the jeep, finally opened them, THEN could not shut them! Argh! I nearly fainted yesterday! They put down sand!! First time! I heard there were 5 cars off our road! I have spun ALL 4 Wheels driving this road! Well I have to feed the animals now. Pam

Hey, Pam we recieved the ice instead of the snow, I live in west TN, our highway dept was out on the roads before they were even frozen, any other time it would have been days before they would have done anything. I tell you all this now and next time they will not even come out. I Just to let everyone know how great it is to see just how many people are from TN on this thread. Take care, Happy Holidays, God Bless.

Well Pam.it's how it is.Welcome to the rural south.Been thru your town when we were looking for land. You're not too far from the KY border.I live on a so called county road that never gets plowed or graveled. All the headaches but none of the benefits. We plow it ourselves.
Least sciff of snow and we shut down.Well, take a look at the roads- steep cliffs,no guardrails, sharp curves everywhere. No wonder. So we just hole up for the winter.

Hey, Pam, we're here, too! Where are you? We're off Upper Caney Valley, toward Sneedville. Wouldn't have guessed you were from here by your name, know what I mean? We've been here 4 years, and this is the first time they've sanded. When we first came from north of Chicago, I found out I couldn't drive anywhere when it snowed, because everything is uphill.
Awful cold last night, and we still have Jan & Feb to go.
E-mail me if you like. Us foreigners should stick together.
