Kelp, nutritional yeast...where do I get it cheap?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Recently there was mention of using kelp, nutritional yeast and canola oil for dogs skin. I cannot now find the thread that it was on. I am pretty sure the guy was in Houston. I went to the health food store yesterday as I have 3 old dogs that certainly could benefit from this mix. The yeast was $7/lb and the kelp was $0.52/ oz. The fellow who told of this mix gave a web site where it could be purchased. I need that web site. I sure can't afford the health store prices. Thanks... Judith

I believe that nutritional yeast is essentially the same as brewer's yeast. The Jeffers Equine Catalog has brewer's yeast for a little over a dollar per pound, plus shipping. Also, there are several equine supplements that are largely kelp. I think Source is one of them.

I buy kelp in 50 lb bags for $25 each. Might be too much 'bulk' for you, but I feed it to all my critters. Perhaps you could go in with someone else and split? Anyway, I could try to find people local distributors if you're interested.

Judith, think feed store or mill and not health food store. Beneficial/Nutritional Yeast, or what we use Diamond V Yeast, will keep a very long time if kept dry and away from insects. And you can get the same type of benefits by feeding Probios dry dispersable powder from the Jeffers Livestock Catalog 1800-Jeffers or jefferslivestock.com they also have a pet catalog and their are lots of natural products in them that are much cheaper than health food and feed stores. Kelp is also a feed additive, which we saw no beneficial results from feeding it to our dogs or to our goats. Vicki

You might want to try your local Co-op. Yeast is all good at keeping fleas down.

The analyses I've seen of nutritional yeast (why can't you ever find these things again when you want them?) made them pretty 'iffy', there was such a wide spectrum of contents. I use Probios on my dogs, and sidestep the possibility of contributing to a yeast infection by feeding any yeast to the animals.

I've had really good results with feeding kelp to my horses...they're in better condition than any of the others at the barn who are on a chemical based supplement. If a 50 lb bag seems like a little much, consider how good it is for your garden too! Both as a soil amendment, and a foliar spray when made into a tea.

Hi Judith, it was from me, Annie in SE OH!!! It is kelp, garlic powder, nutritional yeast (it is NOT the same as brewer's yeast !!!) and corn oil, and the kelp, garlic and nutritional yeast is available from Frontier Natural Products Co-op, 1-800-669-3275, or www.frontiercoop.com You have to be a member of the co-op to order, which is a one time fee of 10 dollars, but the kelp will cost around 5 dollars a pound, the garlic around 4 dollars a pound, and the nutritional yeast around 7 dollars a pound, very cheap compared to the health food stores, who are getting much of their stuff from Frontier themselves!

If you have any other questions, feel free to e-mail me, and this mix will work wonders on any type of animal or human as well.

Annie - I checked out the site (frontier) but their nutritional yeast price for mini-flakes was $14.55/lb. Am I missing something? Thank you.
