Corday and Foley catheters

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ER Discussions : One Thread

Hi All, I was just wondering...when I was watching last week's episode, I literally jumped up and down angrily while watching Elizabeth remove the Foley catheter...here is a woman who is already dealing with a malpractice suit, the nurse in the hospital has already reminded her that it's not her place to give medical orders there, and then she pulls out a catheter! The doctor was hesitant to order it removed in the first place, Mark was already in an altered state once after the surgery -- and she just pulls it our and walks him to the bathroom! She loves him, I know, but I thought it was way risky -- and unbelievably stupid. What if he had fallen? Or something worse? How would she have felt? Losing Mark...and her career? Hasn't she learned her lesson -- the incident with the patient when she was overtired (no clue as to Episode # or season, sorry) -- the incident with the surfer -- and now she just goes and does this anyway?!? Didn't anyone else have a problem with this?

Response to Didn't Anybody Else Have A Problem With This???

I had a problem with her being in the operating room, because I just can't see a neurosurgeon allowing someone like Elizabeth in the operating room (at least not without a fight). I didn't really have a problem with the catheter though, because when you love someone your judgement becomes clouded. Elizabeth wasn't acting as his doctor (even though she is one) she was acting as his fiance and she wanted to make him feel better. Actually, I think this is one of the interesting aspects of this storyline. Elizabeth hasn't had to really deal yet with her emotions clouding her medical judgement (I don't count the surfer because that was just carelessness). It's almost Doug like :)

Well, that's one way of looking at it. If you want to see 'positive' thoughts about this scene and many others, just go to The Mark and Elizabeth Fan Club. Most of the stuff there is positive. (i haven't seen the scene yet)

I had a problem with her removing the catheter. Sure she's a surgeon, but she wasn't *his* surgeon. There could have been a reason they were delaying having it taken out.

I don't know what the deal is with her- make the same mistake over and over and over again. I expected something bad to happen when she took the catheter out- lucky it didn't!
