Yeah One rig is Rotary Rig (Think power drill) the other is Cable Tool (think Hammer and star drill). Rotary Rig would win easy barring break downs.

I've seen this suggestion elswhere, they suggested burying two plastic tanks at a certain depth in the same soil. The first one to reach the tank won. Someone else also suggested they must also then pump the water to the surface. The most water pumped in a certain time won.

It is actually very easy to see who wins. Drill for an hour and see who gets the deepest. Put the rigs about 50 ft apart and they will have the same geology to drill through, thus would be fair. They can work side-by-side, at the same time, to increase the excitement. Be sure to get approval from the local authorities before spudding the wells.

By the way, if both rigs are 50 ft apart, and there is a known aquifer at a known depth, they are both guaranteed to hit water. The problem is that the water won't gush out of the ground and they may drill right through it and not even know it. Besides, it may take days to drill deep enough to actually hit water, depending on local condition. Just drilling for a certain time is good enough to demonstrate the technology.

Come drill in SOuth aFRICA , We have some bad formations. Its not always penetration that wins , but more than that. Mere the ability to drill threw unconsilidated formations.
