I was thinking the same. That thread was getting way to long.

The way the economy is going we might have to have a bunch of Layoff threads.

Here's a link to the old list for reference.

My 1.4 cents. Am I the only one noticing that, on the old thread, as the quantity of posts increased the number indicated decreased? At one point its number was up to 45 then, as new posts were added, its number declined. Odd.

RachaelI noticed that also. It was up to 51 posts at one time. I think that it has something to do with the archiving. There were no posts removed from the thread because I would have to do it.
-- Martin Thompson (mthom1927@aol.com), January 17, 2001.
I have seen all the announcements, through "eyes opened". The drastic lay offs. It is not a pretty picture, once you have the opportunity to align the effect. May Heaven, prove me wrong.
-- My Story (andI@sticking.com), January 17, 2001.
In California, if the energy crisis is not solved soon, they can expect an economic downturn like no one has ever seen since the Great Depression. SCE & PGE employ over 35,000 employees, not included are contractors, hiring hall employees, etc. If PG&E were to go under, so will their suppliers and the tickle down effect will be devastating.

Martin, I hadn't intended to imply that posts were being removed from the thread. I knew it had something to do with the software, but it's a new and different problem that I haven't noticed before, and it is confusing because I rely on the numbers to tell me if new posts have been added to a thread.

January 18, 2001 GM could be close to announcing 60,000 to 80,000 layoffs tonight's news reported.January 18, 2001 Allegheny Techologies Closed Plant. Laid off unknown number of employees.
January 18, 2001 Hyundai Technologies (or some offshoot of Hyundai) laying off 25% workforce.
January 18, 2001 CSFB (Hope I got initials right) laying off 8%. Unknown number.
Obviously if and when the GM layoffs occur, it is the biggest one and quite frightening. The "trickle down" effect of suppliers losing sales and probably following with layoffs and that many good paying jobs lost and perhaps a billion (2 or 3 billion?) more dollars of wages not being spent in the market place will have a "multiplying" effect on other businesses from TVs, DVD players, restaurants, toys, etc. will also be devastating to the economy.
