Where was Chinatown's Clothesline Alley from the silent film "Amarilly of Clothesline Alley"?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

I recently watched the old Mary Pickford silent film "Amarilly of Clothesline Alley", set in San Francisco and released in 1918.

The Clothesline Alley mentioned in the title was supposedly in or near Chinatown and intersected with Clay Street. Was this ever a real street name? If not, which alley was it really and/or where were the scenes filmed? It looks to me a little like Waverly, but I haven't been over there yet to see if any buildings match. Does anyone know where any of the other scenes in the movie were filmed?

Thank you!

Hi Scott,

My name is Thomas Elliott and I submitted a question 3 questions prior to yours. I think that we have stumped the San Francisco Historical Society with our geographical questions that we have formed from watching old movies. I guess it would be better for us to find out the answer to our questions by Library Research. I hope that you get an answer. Good Luck,

Thomas
