I was watching the episode last night with a big group of people and there were unfortunately a few parts that I didn't hear very well. First of all, does anyone who taped it (or just has a really good memory) know exactly what Carter said to Chase at the end? I heard him say something like "Getting high is the first thing I think of when I get up in the morning and the last thing I think of before I go to bed...I am a drug addict." But I would love to read a transcript of his whole monologue. Also, what exactly were Kerry's new restrictions for Carter? I caught that he cannot prescribe/administer narcotics and that he again has to attend 90 meetings in 90 days and provide documentation of this, but was there anything else? Thanks.

Carter walks in with a takeout bag and a shake. Sets things down and says:

Carter: It’s a good thing they didn’t frisk me….(offers shake) it’s chocolate.

Chase: Go away.

Carter: There’s a reason I didn’t come to see you Chase. I thought about coming, but I didn’t. And I didn’t because I was afraid, and I was afraid because I didn’t want to addm…when I got stabbed last year at work, a friend of mine got killed and I um,… ended up addicted to painkillers. And it caught up with me. And I started to um…shoot Morphine and Demerol and Fentynal and whatever else I could get my hands on. And I don’t know what would have happened if I hadn’t got busted, but I did and I went to rehab…but I wasn’t like any of those people…I mean I got into this because of an injury, because of circumstance, because of a near death experience. And they…It wasn’t me, I mean it was me, but it wasn’t… anyway, I did the program. I pretended that I bought into it, I did everything I was supposed to do, except believe that I had anything to do with what had happened. And then…I almost relapsed…or I guess, I guess I did relapse. Anyway, I didn’t come to see you Chase, because I didn’t want to admit to the fact that I was just like you. The truth is,…there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think of getting high. It’s the first thing I think about when I wake up in the morning…and it’s the last thing I think of when I go to bed at night. And I think about it all day. I’m a drug addict.

Chase: You bring any french fries?

Ha! I haven't watched this eppy yet, but just reading that transcript and those, "Did you bring any french fries?" was hilarious. It seems to me that Chase didn't want to talk to Carter, didn't want to know whatever it was he wanted to say and wasn't interested. Carter, however, i think that bit of Chase's "Did u bring any french fries." was a good thing-o for Carter, strangly.

(I hope to god that forget what i've just read in 13 weeks and 13 days!)

The thing w/ Chase was that Carter hadn't gone to see him for a year and after Carter's speech, he decided he'd accept his attempt at friendliness and take what he'd brought for him. He was still pretty bitter, but we can assume that he let Carter in a little.

Ames, you got all of Carter's restrictions. Kerry also said that if he messed up again he'd be out of there, but she seemed forgiving.

Chase's comment does have a good effect on Carter, because he laughs (another thing Carter hasn't really done for a long time) in a sort of relieved way.

I thought it was a rather bitter laugh, myself...I may have misread the whole scene, but I got the impression that Chase didn't really absorb what John was saying, since he's brain damaged, and that his comment at the end was such a non sequitur that Carter thought, "I'm this close to being like this myself." Or something along those lines. Ah, who knows.

Chase definitely understood. From the beginning the reason John was there was because Chase was refusing to eat out of loneliness/depression. Asking for the french fries was more than just comic relief. It was Chase eating again, letting John know he was forgiven.

Chase definitely got it. And I also think that if the tables were turned, Chase would be doing exactly the same thing, and I think he realized that too.

Several people were disappointed that Carter didn't "admit" in an AA meeting. I think this would have been out of character for Carter. I'm glad it worked out the way it did. It was probably harder to do what he did in front of Chase. Remember, John didn't want to admit that he was just like his cousin. He thought he was better, and he was wrong. And he realizes, that it could just as easily have been him sitting in that chair unable to speak. I think that would be harder to face than a roomful of drunks and junkies. And Chase, of all people, would probably be the *one* person to truly get where John was coming from.

i haven't seen season 7 yet, so the last time i saw chase was in season 4, just after his overdose. it seemed then,as if his brain was so severely damaged that he couldn't even eat or drink on his own and had to be looked after in that nursing home. how come he's so "alive" again (that's really not meant maliciously or something, i just mean talking, recognizing people, eating, drinking....) as it seems to be the case in this scene?

It's probably because it HAS been three years since we've seen him. I do think that Chase always recognized Carter, you can see it when Carter is helping him put on his pyjamas in season 4. You can see it in his eyes that he knows that he can't do anything anymore and it's killing him. Chase proabably wantd to get better, and they might have worked with him more.
