Way back when one wanted a smoke---you made yourself a pipe! I remember when I was about 12 years old and had watched our uncle Dale smoke his cob pipe. He always smoked Prince Albert--in the can, unless he had to "bum" bakker from his daddy. Grandpa always smoked "Old HIllside" in his cob pipe. Old HIllside came in a little white cloth sack with a yellow drawstring to close't with. I found a nice corncob and commenced to work'n on it with my "Lone Ranger" pocket knife. That big whittl'n blade was sharp as a razor! After cutt'n a finger rite smart-I finally got the cob cut off and holler'd out. To the creek I went and got some cane type bushes. It was a simple task to run a wire up through a broke off stem. Whittle't down a mite, drill a hole in the side of the cob and you had a pipe. I didn't have any Prince Albert, Old Hillside or even Granger Twist[Old Sam Runyon used it for pipe bakker] so I used the seeds from Sour Dock. It was not good----EVER! Coffee wasn't any better and grapevine was out of the question! Later I did take up the "burn'n of weed"--TOBACCO-NOT MARYJANE! AFter smok'n P.A. for almost 20 years I was driv'n down the highway and decided I did't want to smoke anymore. The cob, P.A. and matches all went out the truck window--end of story! Thats' been probably about 15 years ago or so. Have'nt missed it any, never chewed the woodwork, shoes or fingernails. I did have more time to eat and gained a few pounds which I've become accustomed to and will probably keep until He calls me home. Oh yea--Pap never knew about that first cob pipe--at least he never mentioned it if he did! Matt.24:44

I can relate. I actually had a "store-bought" corncob that I think cost me 9 cents. No way I could buy tobaccy, so I dried corn silk. Tasted OK to me, since I had NO idea what it was supposed to taste like! Later, I got some real stuff. Union Leader, as I remember. Wicked awful, but still, pretty "grown-up"!! I quit smoking 20 years ago, more or less, but I still occassionally buy a package of Drum or equal and smoke a hand-rolled cigarette. After about 10 smokes over a week or so, I throw it out. I guess I'm weird, but I DO enjoy a hand-rolled cigarette every now and then. Last one was about a year ago, but I may get another next month! GL!
