Are M.Coons less likely to pee inside than other breeds?greenspun.com : LUSENET : Maine Coon Cats : One Thread |
We've had other non-maine coon breeds, but all eventually peed on the carpet or other floor surfaces at some time or another. The 1 maine coon (male) we had never did this. Yes, litter boxes were used, along with all the latest housebreaking procedures, all with the same end results. This occurred at (3) different houses (homes), which never had cats before. We really want another cat (M.Coon) but not at the expense of turnung our new house into an ammonia factory. Any suggestions?!?!?!?!? Thanks, Joe.

I have had quite few cats in my life and they all peed as them fancied where they fancied from time to time. Now I have two maines and they are just crazy about their boxes from their kittenhood. They are using their litter boxes as their life depended on that. Both adopted at different ages, from different litters. Absolutely the best litter box oriented cats in the cat world. They prefer clamping litter, they showed their displeasement if I use clay non clump and they chirp when the clumping is back. Non the less they will use whatever but they have preferences and way of showing it. Litter is cleaned once a day from all the stuff and changed on as needed basis. All to it. Never peed or .... else.

I have 3 cats; one is a 24lb male Maine Coon. All three share two litter boxes (and have for the past 2 1/2 years). I use two huge black containers purchased at Lowes which are actually used to mix concrete in. Our Coon needs the extra large space so he can turn around in it with ease. We have two of these and I use "Scoop Away" cat litter; I faithfully scoop once a day. And I do not use any perfumed carpet-fresh type powder; I only use baking soda and spray "Febreeze" in the litter once in awhile and mix it around. I keep the entire area around the litter boxes swept with a broom, every day. Cats seem very particular about the cleanliness of thier "private" space. And that's what I do; and I will knock on wood as I say, no accidents in this house!

I've got a Maine Coon that I picked up as a stray (how anyone could let such a great cat become a stray is beyond me!). He's never pee'd in the house and when I recently moved house I had to keep him in for a few days so I put a litter box down for him. He used it straight away without being trained to it and even tried to tidy up after himself when he inadvertantly scattered litter on the floor! Mine's always proved to be extremely fastidiuos about where he does his business. I don't think you'll have any trouble!
