*****GRADY TRACK NEWS Issue 2, March 25, 2002BIG TEST AWAITS KNIGHTS
With three meets over five days in the next week and a half, Grady faces the toughest test of the season to this point. On Thursday, the Knights face Southside and South Atlanta to close out its schedule of meets at Lakewood Stadium.
Saturday, it’s on to the Rome Relays, which in years past, has been one of the faster meets of the year. Grady enters Rome as the defending champion in the 4x400 meter relay, holding on at the end a year ago to beat Cnm in 3:28.
Crim is expected to return to Rome as well as Therrell, which ran 3:24 at the Morehouse Relays and placed in front of Grady twice this year in meets at Lakewood. Cartersville, which placed fourth in last year’s AA state meet, is also expected to give Grady a challenge.
The 4x400 relay should be at full strength by Saturday, with the injured Jermaine Revere returning to the team.
Rome will also be the first relay meet of the year for the team. Grady will run the 4x 100, 4x 200, the Sprint Medley, the 4x 800, the Distance Medley and the 4x400. Rome will also contest the 100 meters and 110 hurdles as well as the 3200 as open events.
Starting Apr. 2, Grady will get its first taste of the level of competition it must surpass to establish itself once again as one of the elite track programs in AA, at the Atlanta Track Classic. Grady finished third behind State Champions Mays and Crim last year and fourth behind Mays, Crim and Douglass the year before, hurt by two controversial disqualification calls for runners stepping on the lane lines in the 800 and the 4x400.
The Knights should have another strong showing in the distance events with Wil Cramer and Yosef Bekele. In the sprints, Robert Owens, who clocked 50.3 seconds last week and Jermaine Revere, who ran 51.3 at Morrow are expected to compete for the 400 title. Mays’ Brandon Mitchell ran 49.8 at the Stephenson Invitational Saturday. A second Raiders runner also clocked 49.8.
Revere and Andrew Moore are expected to hold their own in the 200 meters and the long jump. Also, the relays should be at full strength and ready for prime time.
MOORE, REVERE ON TRACK HONOR ROLL
Andrew Moore and Jermaine Revere were named to the Georgia Track Coaches Honor Roll for the week ending Mar. 20 after their performances at Morrow High School’s Mustang Invitational on Mar. 16.
Revere, running for the first time this year, took third in the 400 with a 51.3 and third in the 200 with a 22.70. Revere also anchored the 4x400, which placed fifth overall.
Moore, finished third in the 100 meters in 11 flat, fourth in the 200 meters in 22.72 and ran first leg on the fifth place 4x400 and second leg on the fifth place 4x100.
Moore placed second in the long jump, leaping 21 feet 7.5 inches. Revere jumped 20 feet 5 inches, but didn’t make the final round.
Moore and Revere made the Honor Roll in the 200 and Moore made the list in the long jump. On that list, Moore was sandwiched between performances by two competitors from Class AA rival Washington Wilkes, which finished second at last year’s state meet behind Crim and just ahead of Grady.
Washington Wilkes’ Kendervous Wiley also made the list, having run 10.8 seconds in the 100 thus far. Wiley finished second in the 100 at last year’s state meet ahead of Grady alum Jeremy Bateman, who finished third and Cnm’s Gerran Walker, the fourth-place finisher.
Other notable performances from the Mustang Invitational include Wil Cramer’s second place finish in the 3200, with a 10 minute 10 second race. Cramer finished behind Lakeside’s Joe Thome, the state’s fastest runner in any classification and one of the fastest high school distance runners in the country.
Against Therrell and Washington, on Mar. 21, the team continued to show improvement.
Robert Owens, coming off disappointing performances in the 800 and the 4x400 relay at Morrow, exacted revenge, storming back to shock Therrell’s Corey Bolden, a consistent 49-50 second ‘400 runner, to nip Bolden in the last 10 meters, and post a 50.3, one of the fastest times in the state to that point. Owens also redeemed himself on the relay, going 50 seconds as well. Andrew Moore also turned in a 50 second split.
Ismail Ali finished third in the 400 in 52 seconds.
JV AT FULL STRENGTH FOR FIRST TIME THIS SEASON
In one of the most impressive performances by a group of Grady JV sprinters since the trio of Jacob Richmond, Jeremy Bateman and Willie Millings, who four years ago beat everyone they came up against and went on to establish a Grady school record as varsity runners in 2000 with a 42.56 in the 4x100 relay and a place in the state finals, Grady’s young sprinters ran way from Therrell and Washington.
Taking a breather from varsity duties, Marcel Hill led the attack, running a crushing first leg, breaking the stagger on two runners before passing the baton to an over-anxious Leonard Shivers, who left too early, making for an unclean exchange.
Shivers, after slowing to wait for Hill, held off a Washington runner before handing the stick to Bryan Hendricks, who put the race out of reach in the curve before passing the baton to freshman Javarus Todd, who anchored Grady to a 15 meter victory and a 45.8 finish.
Grady’s time would have placed it among the top JV times at last weekend’s Stephenson JV Invitational. Stephenson’s JV ran 44.2 to win that event, other teams ran 45 seconds or slower.
Hill, who at Morrow’s Mustang Invitational on Mar. 16, held his own in a varsity race, finishing fourth in a preliminary heat of the 100 in 11.4 seconds, which has been a consistent time for him, blistered the field against Therrell and Washington in 11.2 seconds.
Hill led the race from start to finish. Shivers, running in lane five, pulled up with a hamstring strain about 40 meters from the finish. Bryan Hendricks, running in lane eight, clocked 11.7 seconds, finishing the race despite a runner in lane nine running in and out of his lane the entire race, even through the finish.
The JV sprinters are will be together again in the sprint medley and possibly the 4x200 at the Rome Relays.
A version of the team may also take the track at the Atlanta Track Classic, with Marcel Hill, possibly to be held out of the JV 4x100 and called back up to handle alternate duties for the varsity team.
The group will also test its mettle for the first time this year in the 200 on Thursday against Southside and South Atlanta. Hill, Hendricks and Alonzo Dennis, who ran a 23 second 200 en route to running out of steam in the 400, are the likely line-up to take the track. Todd may be pressed into duty if a lane is available.
JV hurdler Nicholas Gill is also making progress, running a smooth race at Morrow and running a 57-second split and holding off a runner in the 4x400. Jonathan Brown ran 59 seconds in his first 400 this year. Brown ran the 400 and 800 last year.
