Whitelightning Flash & HP5+ Wins

greenspun.com : LUSENET : B&W Photo - Film & Processing : One Thread

Not so much a question but a note of a recent experience.

Through the threads I have pursued the 3200 fast film for no flash situations, I have managed to produce prints that are classified as very good by local photogs for no flash.

This last Tuesday evening, I had the opprotunity to shoot some local high school basketball. One of the photographers from our local paper was there to shoot the game. He was using Whitlightning 1600's triggered by remote. I was ready to reload and he asked me if I had any 400 on me, I told him yes (HP5+), he said load it, gave me an extra remote, and told me to have fun he would be back later to shoot the Varsity game.( I work for the paper in systems)

The pictures were great. I thought I had taken good shots in the past, but nothing I had shot previously compared. Not that I could ever afford that type of setup,(a pair pointing to the ceiling, one on each end of the gym, so as not to blind the players) but I know now that there is a difference. Plus the decreased grain was wonderful.

I do realize now that, IN SOME INSTANCES, the equipment can make a difference. By this I mean that the availability of the professional flash setup, allowed me to move to a slower film, and get better, more evenly exposed pictures. Resulting in a night and day difference. Please note, I am not shutting the door on 3200 film, the shots I took with it were deemed very good, but there is just so much of a difference to be able to shoot this sport(Basketball) with proper flash.

I think I will at least mention it on my wish list!!!
