re: knee surgery

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Maine Coon Cats : One Thread

Our 5 yr old Maine Coon has developed knee and hip problems. We have taken it to a Feline Center in the Atlanta area. The vet suggests surgery to both knees to correct the depth of the area that holds the knee cap. Chancellor's knee caps are popping out of joint causing him to put more stress on his hips (now causing arthritis) and on his other leg which subsequently developed the same problem. The operation is extraordinarily expensive. Chancellor 'Chance' is part of our family for the last 5 years. He is a large cat, not overweight, but long and tall, tipping the scales at 16.5-17 lb. Any experience with such problems? Is this problematic with the breed? The vet claims that it will make a dramatic difference in his life. The operation has been quoted at 1,200-1,500 per knee. We are not making any rash or quick decisions but this is a very serious commitment. Does this sound high? Any suggestions, recommendations or personal advice is greatly appreciated as we love Chance dearly. We live in Atlanta and would consider taking him to a neighboring state for surgery if necessary if anyone has a recommendation for a specialist. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Jon K. Davis

I took mine to the osteopath yesterday, and he was diagnosed with a slight case of patella luxation. The vet seems to think it is congenital and was agrivated by a fall. The bottom line is, he quoted 1000 - 1400 to correct the bad knee. He told me to wait on the other, to see if it got worse.

Dear Jon, May I suggest you visit the FHDA site (Http://www.FHDA.com) where there are personal experiences of people with cats who have had knee surgery. There is an eGroup called the FelineHD list that you can join via the FHDA site. Here you will find a wealth of knowledge and personal accounts of dealing with the same issues you are facing. The list is a low activity list, but they seem to come together and be a great support for one another when one faces a problem like this. The group consist of fanciers/breeders and cat lovers across the country and seas so you may find someone can refer you to another vet.

If I can help in anyway feel free to contact me too.

Kathy
