hey jay what about these bait shop worms?greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
jay, i gotta cooler from the dump .got it all prepared for the new tenants(air holes, drain holes, bedding, & velcro to hold the cover on, see'in as we have a cat too). then i went to the bait shop. they had red worms & leaf worms.i thought i remembered using red worms for bluegill fishin' last year, but they were so small at the bait shop. the leaf worms were much larger, just the opposite of what i remember. is memory failing me in my old age? could the containers be mismarked? or is my memory failing me in my old age?or is my memory failing me in my old age? also can the 2 different types live together in harmony (i bought 2 packs of 30 of the leaf worms).thanks again, fred

The phylum Annelida consists of over 9000 species. Some may prefer vegetable matter , while others prefer manure or leaf mold. Mixing species shouldn't be a problem as long as the food mix can support what you are raising, however seperating and counting is more difficult if you are raising bait product. I am trying now to get good data on various species in cast production (quantity and nutrient levels). I am also trying a mixed bin to see how quickly and concentrated the casts will be produced. My understanding is that the species normally do not cross breed.

Red worms, darlin' -I did the same thing, but guess what...? They won't even sell red worms out here anymore (Idaho). So, I just got some tubs of whatever it is they ARE selling, and they said they'd by them back if I wanted to make some money off the investment. Now... If they work the same way the rest of the worm world works, I maybe will get my money back on them.....
Its ok if I don't - they were just an idea to get rid of some of the rabbit dung and kitchen leftovers that dogs, cats, bunnies won't eat (like coffee grounds and such)!
