Thursday March 08 07:11 AM EST Boca water supply won't be replenished from EvergladesBy NEIL SANTANIELLO , South Florida Sun-Sentinel Boca Raton is cut off from water needed to refill municipal wells -- and wells in northeast Broward County will soon be deprived in the same way -- because a source of water for the Hillsboro Canal has been closed, water managers were told Wednesday.
Less than 24 hours after the South Florida Water Management District on Tuesday closed a gate that passes water from the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge into the Hillsboro, the canal fell about two feet, officials said.
That drop has forced Boca Raton to stop pumping Hillsboro water into a second canal, the E-3 just west of Military Trail. The flow in the E-3 helps keep the city's main drinking-water wells along that road from going dry, said Douglas Andrews, deputy director of the city Utility Services Department.
"It's the most serious impact we've seen so far" from water shortage, he said after a two-hour meeting in West Palm Beach between the water district managers and local water suppliers.
