Canada Taking Over US Version of JYW?greenspun.com : LUSENET : Junkyard Wars : One Thread |
I was looking at the list of Team being maintained by Ron Lesseraux of Team Mr. Fixit and I was wondering about the representation of each state, so I ran the numbers. And surprise, the Canadians lead it with 13 teams on Ron's list. California is next with 9, "Not Listed" with 8, and Ohio with 7. See the complete list below.
There could be errors in the counting so no flames. Some of the teams had multiple states listed so I took the last one listed. Not scientific but it worked!

Last time I checked Canada was a country, so comparing the entries received from Canada with those received from the States (counting only those who are shown in your "survey") gives a very different count. 51 US, 9 Cdn, 8 Not listed. Hope you're not in charge of the next census.

It is amazing how many teams there are from Canada. The only reason I can find is this: They have nothing better to do, Gotta keep warm. Booze and Junkyard Wars - no place but Canada! I say the more the merrier. WE TEXANS AINT AFRAID OF NO CANADIANS!!! (not even 13 teams of them, ooooopppsss (running away!!))Good luck to our Northern Friends.

Rick, Yes you are correct Canada is a country. I did not break out Canada in to its 13 Provincial and Territorial Governments (10 provinces and 3 territories) in order to keep it brief. My apologies to the Canadians JYW applicants. However, if you really want to know the numbers to that level of detail here they are.Providence Team Ontario 7 British Columbia 2 Saskatchewan 1 Quebec 1 Prince Edward Island 1 Montreal 1

You know, they call it the US version, but I'm guessing thats only because its filmed in the US. Its really the North American version. Why didn't they film it in Canada? Too much snow I suspect.Had to work with a company out of Toronto once. On a conference call, having heard they had snow the previous day, I asked them if they had recieved much - "Nah, only 2-3 feet"....
However, to answer the question above: 284 million Americans, 31 million Canadians; about a 9:1 ratio. 13 Canadian teams, 57 American teams; about 4:1. I think simply comparing national numbers does not account for the difference.
BTW, it appears that the list on http://www.SeriousCigars.com/jyw is down...

I think we are getting cabin fever. We are afraid if we leave the house the phone will ring. We can settle this in "The Yard" in a couple of weeks. Chris Phifer Team THEM

Well well!!! The only differences I can see between American teams and Canadian teams are:#1 No Gov. support for us, at least you guys might get a cigar.... #2 $1.50 for a beer to you, and $7.00 a beer for us #3 we didn't have to chase a ryder truck from floida to make sure our ballets.. I mean our applications are in...

Michael,Not to be too much a stickler for detail (but given that is so much colder here than in Texas and we have nothing to do)... Montreal and Quebec (city) are not provinces but cities within Quebec province....
I'll be happy to see Canadian's this time around (even if the show is missing the best hosts), same there are no Aussie's in the mix...
To all of you who are getting the chance to be on the show, we look forward to seeing your bodging best soon!

I'm actually amazed that we're the only Alaskan team that has admitted to having applied for the show. You could pick three people at random from the population up here and be likely to have a good team. (Assuming that they weren't hiding from the law and could be cleaned up enough for the show.) The gaggle of Canadian teams seems logical for the same reason. (Possibly including the legal and hygiene problems.)Gregg Christopher - The Odd Goods

I have an opinion. I think it may be that the interest per area is proportional to the penetration of cable/satalite carrying TLC and Junkyard wars. Ontario and Quebec have particularly high cable penetration. I believe the east and west coasts are particularly high as well. I think the prairies have lower cable penetration. It might be at least part of the reason.

This is an interesting breakdown of were the teams are from. I was not suprised by Canada or California, but was suprised by so many teams from Ohio. My brother Mike reminded me that both Lincoln and Hobart are in Ohio, therefore Ohio has the greatest concentration of poeple who can weld.
-- Joe Pressel (demwits@earthlink.net), March 12, 2001.
Here in Canada we may have to stay warm but to the Texans who say they ain't afraid of us Canadians you better get out your ten gallon hats to hold all the tears you're gonna cry when we kick you butts. *LOL* Good Luck Everybody!! A little humour helps the waiting game. Your Canadian Friends The Crazy Canucks
My brother Mike reminded me that both Lincoln and Hobart are in Ohio
heheheh...i was born in the town that hosts Hobart, and my uncle worked there till he retired. They also have a welding school as well.
now, if only i could get my hands on a Hobart floor mixer so i can make rocket fuel...
I do have a couple of Kitchaid appliances...

I had a nice laugh from the post from Gregg Christopher of "The Odd Goods," a team from Alaska. He is almost certainly quoting the reaction of women to the excess number of men in Alaska, "The odds are good, but the goods are odd."
-- Rick Tyler (rick@raf.com), March 13, 2001.
Brian, I think you were lied to. On a good year, Toronto wouldn't know a 2 foot snow storm if it lumbered up beside them and smacked them in the chops. The last time they received a storm they called the military in too help clean it up. Bunch of babies! Only good thing to come out of it was the hundreds of jokes that the rest of the country could use (with the exception of Vancouver...you're a bunch of babies too).

Reading this 'thread' I am surprised that JYW is filmed in the U.S at all, given America's peoccupation with liability. On the other hand the U.S. is, without doubt, the world's greatest producer of junk! :- ))) (Just teasing - don't suit me!)
-- Steven C. Potter IEng, MIED (Steven.Potter@sympatico.ca), March 14, 2001.
Is this show no longer to be filmed in overseas? That would be a horrible shame.
-- (nadar@BigPoppaPump.zzn.com), March 14, 2001.
Around here (southern Ontario, canada) we hardly get ANY snow AT ALL, there is more snow in New York State's mountainous areas... I've barely been able to snowboard for the past three years Anyways, Canada is a HUGE country, it's not a desolate wasteland of snow and ice, it's diverse, we have areas of nevada desert-like land near the rockies, rolling plains, mountains, tundra, dense forest, coastal areas.... we touch three oceans... wait, I'm rambling... I love my country too much "Ooooohhh Canada..." *sings national anthem*
