SEC's Edgar system hit by outages

By Troy Wolverton Staff Writer, CNET News.com April 12, 2001, 12:55 p.m. PT The Securities and Exchange Commission's real-time reporting system suffered some downtime Thursday, its second outage in two days.

The Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis and Retrieval System, also known as Edgar, went down around 7:40 a.m. PDT Thursday and was down until about noon, SEC spokeswoman Carol Patterson said. The outage followed a similar multi-hour outage Wednesday afternoon and evening that lasted until about 6:30 p.m.

Both outages were caused by a problem with a Verizon data line, Patterson said. Verizon spokesman Harry Mitchell acknowledged that the problem was with one of the company's data lines, but declined to give details. Verizon is close to fixing the problem, he said.

The Edgar system receives SEC filings from companies and distributes them to online sites. The problem left customers of sites such as Edgar Online without real-time access to SEC filings.

The outage, however, did not hinder companies from filing SEC documents, Patterson said.
