Dirt roads of the past. About 50 years ago all country roads were dirt, at least in these parts. Some of the larger county roads were graveled a little and were considered "all weather roads" by the big wigs in our county. The school bus could not navigate those old mud roads in the wintertime. We had to walk 3/4 mile down the old Montz lane to catch the bus---that is if we wanted to go to school! Pap wouldn't let us play hooky over a little thing like mud roads. When the warm, dry weather of spring would come around the school bus driver would borrow the township grader and would kinda smooth out the winters ruts. North of the old house the roads got so bad durin the winter that huge ruts, holes and even gullys' that just couldn't be smoothed in enough for vehicle travel were to be dealt with come spring. The answer was to "corderoy" the road. For the folks who don't know what that is ---it's takin slab wood [slabs of bark removed from logs at the sawmill-to square up the log] and lay crossways across the road, next to each other. Talk about rough!!!! You drove across that "road fix" real slow as it would shake your teeth out!

I was talk'n to ole Jeep last week about that area of roadway that had been "fixed" about 50 years ago. He said the slabs were still there! Saw'm whilst the road was bein graded past fall. I figgered the termites and rot would've done away with that old oak slab wood in 50 years!

I don't like blacktop roads but then again I'm not really wild about gravel and most certainly don't wanna live on a dirt road. It taxes my old 4 wheel pull chevy pickup to have to navigate all that mud. Gotta fix that left front outer ujoint one of these days!

My husband and I live on a dirt road in Southern California, of all places! It's heck on our 4WD pickup truck, and during the rainy season it's downright scary, but we love it anyway because it makes us forget that LA-LA land is a cool hour and a half away. Natural California is so beautiful -snow covered mountains, chapparal, native oaks and sycamores and incredible wildflowers. But the population growth has put a whole new face on that vision, and our little dirt road in the middle of what's left of unspoiled California is a real treasure. I guess it all depends on the perspective.
