Customers In Six Counties Are Advised to Boil Water Franklin Township and Piscataway Schools are Closed
(WESTFIELD) (WCBS) Don't drink the water -- unless you boil it.
That's the warning Elizabethtown Water Company officials are sending to more than one million customers this morning. Those people -- mostly in Middlesex, Somerset, Union, Hunterdon, Morris and Mercer counties -- are experiencing low or no water pressure.
That's because a 60 inch water main broke Monday night on one of the company's major transmission lines. Elizabethtown officials were at the scene early Tuesday morning, but said they had not yet developed a specific plan for making repairs. Customers were being asked to conserve water to preserve fire protection capacity and pressure in the affected areas.
The break, near the company's primary water treatment plant in Bridgewater, also affects customers of Edison and Liberty water companies.
Company spokeswoman Erin Reilly says the boil water advisory is just a precaution. She says there's no evidence that contamination has entered the company's distribution system.
Customers should bring their water to a boil and then boil it for three minutes. They're also being asked to conserve water so fire protection service can be preserved.
Franklin Township and Piscataway schools are closed due to the emergency.
