HI! I am following the advise of my good friend Steve Belden of using this forum to find an answer regarding my Summicron F50mm... I have this lens on a R3, but I do not know what is its FILTER size in millimeters. The only thing I know is that I have a 49mm filter which is bigger than the lens. SO I asumme could be between 48 and 46mm. The info in the lens is: Leitz Wetzlar 2717607 Summicron R 1:2/50. Thanks for your time! RICARDO VILLAGRAN.

have you tried taking out a ruler and measuring it? my guess would be that it is a 46mm (because this is a common Leica filter size). Leica seems to go from 39-46-49-55-60, normally a manufacturer won't make something very odd in comparison.

The lens takes Serie VI (threadless) filters held in place by a retaining ring. Probably Leica can still supply the ring, and Serie VI filters are available. Either can probably be found used for very little. Another alternative would be to measure the diameter of the front threads, then look on www.bhphotovideo.com under Photo>Filters>Step-down or Step-up Rings to see if they have one that will go up or down to the nearest standard size. The older 90 Elmarits and Summicrons with Serie VII are 54mm and B&H carries 54-55 adaptors the last I checked, so it may be possible to find one for your lens also. The 1st version of the 35/2.8 Elmarit-R takes the same size.

Have you tried a 48mm filter? I believe they were interchangeable with series 6. I sold a 48mm polarizer to a fellow who said he was going to use it on his 28mm Elmarit which had a series 6 filter size.

The 28 Elmarit-R (1st version) is indeed 48mm, but the Serie filter is a VII not a VI, and it fits into the rear of the hood, rather than being held to the lens by a retaining ring. The identical arrangement (E48 front/Serie VII in hood) can be found on the 1st- versions of both 35 Summicron-R and 50 Summilux-R. The 1st versions of the 35 Elmarit-R and 50 Summicron-R are Serie VI held to the lens by a retaining ring which is a not a standard filter size but I am not certain of the exact mm. Similarly the Serie VI is held to the 1st-version 90 Elmarit-R and early-production 90 Summicron-R by a non- standard (54mm) retaining ring. Some Serie-type R lenses do have standard threads, probably just lucky happenstance. The 1st (Leicaflex) 21/3.4 S/A takes a 67mm, 21/4 S/A takes 72mm (but filter glass must be recessed enough in its mount not to contact the crown of the front element); 1st version 180/2.8 and 250/4 will also, I believe, take 72mm as will later production 400/6.8 Telyts. Early 24/2.8's although unmarked, will take the same E60 as the later production, and the 1st-version 60 Macro-Elmarit will also take E60. There are probably more I'm forgetting.
