UK17,000 manufacturing jobs could go "This gloomy picture across most regions suggests there is nothing to stop a quarter point cut in interest rates this week" - CBI associate director Sudhir Junankar Up to 17,000 manufacturing jobs are likely to be lost between April and June this year, according to a CBI survey which painted a gloomy picture of confidence in the sector.
The quarterly regional survey from the Confederation of British Industry and Business Strategies said the job cuts were due to the effects of the global slowdown.
The report also blamed the "continuing squeeze" on manufacturers' margins.
The survey said that if jobs continued to be cut at the same rate as during the first three months of the year, a further 17,000 manufacturing jobs would be shed in the second quarter.
But it also said the scale of the decline across Britain could be overstated, as it might also reflect the foot-and-mouth crisis and the slowdown in the United States economy.
The survey also found that confidence among manufacturers had fallen at its sharpest rate since January 1999.
CBI associate director Sudhir Junankar said: "For the first time since the UK economy slowed down during 1999, firms consider uncertainty about demand to be the key constraint on their investment plans.
"With inflation prospects good, this gloomy picture across most regions suggests there is nothing to stop a quarter point cut in interest rates this week."
The English regions all reported sharp declines in confidence, with the southern regions - East of England, the South East and London and the South West - recording the sharpest falls.
Export optimism for the year ahead also fell "significantly" in these regions.
Business confidence was down in Wales and Northern Ireland, though the decline was less than in England.
There were also "large falls" in confidence in the North East and North West, reflecting "substantial declines" in total orders during the past four months.

I went back and copied down only what are considered "big" companies or very large layoffs announced since May 1st. These are more staggering than December & January when things like Montgomery Ward, Sears, Home Depot announced layoffs because those were permanently closing stores (Montgomery Wards, Sears, etc.) and it was obvious they were gonna be huge layoffs. These in May, etc., are more frightening because they are "bellweather" companies. These companies are supposed to be the bedrock of the Tech industry & so forth. Plus, some of these are "second" layoff announcements. In other words, they have already had previous layoff announcements in the hundreds or thousands.Hitachi Ltd. 221 or 18%
May 1, 2001 Dow Chemical 4500 or 8%.
May 1, 2001 Nextel 5%.

May 9, 2001 Texas Instruments 2,000 of 42,000.
This is a rough total of about 40,000 just from these 14 companies and in just 9 days this month. Plus, as stated above, some of these are "second" layoffs. This 40,000 is also in addition to the thousands of other layoffs which I didn't include in this list but were still 50 or 200 or 350, etc.

Heard Waccamaw was closing all their stores in the U.S. I can't prove it. Just went off line in a futile search to verify that ALL are closing. Maybe someone with a less encumbered computer or a smarter brain mass can dig up verification. Until then, "don't worry, be happy". But I am still amazed by all the vehicles along the road with "For Sale" signs. Not enough to scare the "yikes" out of me, but enough to scratch my head and say "this is really different". Never heard of Waccamaw? They are a housewares big store, really neat.

"We're going to wind it down over the next few months," said Chris Beseler, senior vice president of marketing of the chain that grew in 24 years from a tourist attraction in Myrtle Beach, S.C., into a 122- store chain with the financial backing of the Kuwaiti government.
Having already closed 60 stores since January, the company Friday dismissed all but a skeleton crew at its corporate headquarters in Myrtle Beach and served notice the remaining 62 stores will be liquidated. About 3,000 employees will lose their jobs.

Philip, that was a nice trail, though I am sure it will disappear as fast as it came. Exactly which generation are you targeting? The Game Boy? Nice enough to really think there are "real thinkers" in the 18 to 28 age range. Those are the same "thinkers" who gave us the "new and improved programs from Hell". Programs which required more hand motion of the operator from keyboard to mouse. More Carpal Tunnel. In my opinion. All programmers, should have to use, the program they create, at the largest facitity, down at the user level. For at least two months. Bet they would sing a different tune. Their latest creation, ain't doing us no favors. Regression. And they created it.
