morel mushrooms in maine?greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
We are planning a move to maine (from minnesota), and are in the process of learning as much as we can about the state/region. With the start of our morel season, we are wondering- are there morels to be found in maine or elsewhere in new england?

I think so, although I've never done so. However, there is a big following of mushrooming in ME. The Maine Mycological Association is the group to contact for a sure answer. The flyer I have in front of me from a 2000 newsletter lists this address to write to: Gary Marshall, membership coordinator 1808 B Forest Ave. Portland, ME 04103 I have eaten many delicious puffballs in the fall and when I have enough spare time (what's that?!) will be studying the local mushroom populations a bit more closely to see what else is edible. My husband harvested his first shitakes this past fall off some oak logs that he put spore plugs in. And people complain about the fungus amongus. They don't know what they're missing!

Doug & Mary...what part of Maine? I'm on the coast at the mouth of the Penobscot River. Cheryl...My husband would love to grow shittake mushrooms, also. Do you use a green oak log and how long do they take til harvesting?
