I have the Leica metal lens hood 12504 that fit's the 35mm summilux 1.4 and the summicron 35mm f2 and am wondering if anyone can tell me why it spins when attached to a summicron. I like the metal hoods better than plastic but the fact that it spins is a bit annoying. Any ideas? Thanks T. Gallagher

It should turn 360 because there aren't any detents on the lens (older 35/2, not the last pre-ASPH version made for the rectangular plastic hood). But if it actually spins freely, something is worn.

Actually I'm using it on the ASPH version of the 35mm summicron and the hood looks almost new.

Hi Tom; I also have that shade as you remember, and in my 35/2 preasph, it moves more freely than in my 35/1.4 preasph, I think is quite normal as long as it doesn´t pop out. Did you have any special experience with the older shade you were using in your 35/2 asph.Best regards Roberto Watson

Hi Roberto, Nothing really, just a preference. I like the metal shades better than plastic. I was just wondering if it is normal for the shade to spin.Tom G.

I always used the 12585 hood on my 35/2 ASPH and pre-ASPH, it would rotate (to line up the vents with the finder)but not spin freely. I liked the vented hood better than the plastic one that blocked the lower right corner of the frame...always though it should have had a cut-out like the 21, 28 and 35/1.4ASPH hoods.

I can't think of any reason why the rotation should be a problem, except for keeping the vent lined up with the finder. Otherwise, since it's symmetrical, it can do no harm even if it spins.

I have been told by someone fairly reliable that the reason this hood spins is because when it was introduced it was also meant to be used on the new 35 Summicron and 35 Summilux Asph's that Leica brought out a few years ago in screwmount. Because a screwmount lens will thread into a slightly different position camera to camera, or as the threads wear, the hood was made circular (because a rectangular hood would not always line up properly on LTM cameras), and it spins because of the same reason, so you could easily adjust the cutouts for the viewfinder. Sound plausible to me!?

Hi Tom,I read somewhere you can apply a little rubber cement on the lens ring to act as a stop for the hood indents. Makes sense I think.
You're on your own regards the type that will leave the least residue when you remove the cement for resale purposes...:)
Cheers.

Tom; You could had something less harmful to the lens, like black teflon tape or white in case black doesn´t exist, you know how easy things can be in the tropics.
