Help, the flies are making my (goat) herd miserable!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

"Biting" or stable flies are driving my pygmies crazy. I have 6. I keep there pen very clean. It has a cement floor. Does anybody have any ideas on something that REALLY works. It can be a pesticide or natural. I don't care as long as it really works.

If you don't milk, you can feed mint, and that will keep the flies off of them.

Use a bug zapper. If neccessary they can be converted to day use by removing the black light and inseting an aromatic bait (make sure its centered so as not to touch the zap grids) . When the pests home in on the bait they meet the grid first.

I've just been reading on one of my Yahoo goats lists that Shakley's Basic H works well to repel flies and any other insects. A small amount either wiped on or sprayed on is all it takes from what I've heard. And this is a biodegradable, non-toxic substance. I haven't tried it myself yet, so can't verify that...but you might want to give it a try. :)patty Prairie Oak Miniatures http://www.minifarm.com/prairie_oak

I use Avon Skin so Soft original bath oil spray on my dogs outside. I have one dog that has a huge open sore area that I have been treating for a while. Seems to work for us/them. Avon also has a bug guard lotion that I use on self when I'm out in my garden, have too or else mosquitoes would carry me off. I'm not advertising it, don't even work for Avon, just found it sure works for this and they can't say this, but I sure can! Maybe can use this one goats too? other animals?

Good Luck on those pesky insects! Debb
