What have been the major phases of san francisco's land use pattern and development?

In the beginning, it was simply make shift. There was no major plan. Then the city started growing too rapidly and an Irishman civil engineer by the name of Jasper O'Farrell was asked by Mayor Washington Bartlet to draw up a city plan. Well, no one really liked it at first, especially the width that they gave Market Street. Though having a wide Market Street turned out to be the right thing to do, I'm not that happy with the way the cross streets were placed north of market.
