I've finally secured a purebread LaMancha goat for a quiet milk goat in a suburban location. The question? I'm looking at this pedigree and can't figure out what some of the *B's and 1*M's and etc mean. Can anyone explain the stuff that isn't actually the name of the goat???
Here is what I've got

Hi Marty, I am sure that Vicki or Sam could do a better job but I will give you a rough "translation" . *B means that the buck has either sired a Star milker (*M) or was the product of a star milker. To be a star milker a doe has to meet certain production standards, either from a herd "on test" or at a one day milk test. It is a complex formula based on the age of the doe, number of lactations and total production in a lactation period. ADGA will send you, for a small charge, a complete discription of the Linear Appraisal System and how to read performance reports. Where it says 2*M it is an indication that two generations, mother and daughter, have both earned stars. Hope that helps a little.

Marty, Wow!! You've got some GREAT bloodlines there! To add to the other answer, GCH means grand champion, The HES are linear appraisal scores. First, their age when tested, then the score. Example:4:00, EX 90, 4 years old, excellent overall, score of 90. (very nice!) If you join the ADGA (and I highly recommend you do, it's only $17.50 a year) You'll get their handbook, of rules and regulations, and all this stuff is explained in detail. Hope you enjoy your new lady! Kathie

Marty: to add to the other answers: S = Sire, SD = Sire's Dam (grandmama), SSD = Sire's Sire's Dam (greatgrandmama) D = Dam, DS = Dam's Sire, you get the idea. It's not clear from your post: Is your doe's Dam a star milker? If so, you can take your doe to a one day milk test and if she passes, she would get a star. The number before the star (example: 2*M) indicates the number of generations in succession that are star milkers. We have twin yearling does out of a 12*M. When they earn their star, they will both be 13*M. Keeping the succession going is important because if you skip a generation you have to start over at 0. Having the star in the pedigree increases the value of the kids your doe will produce. Since you have to breed to get milk and since you probably can't keep every kid your doe will produce, the higher price they can command, the better. (I believe livestock should pay their own way as much as possible.) Congratulations on your new doe. Have you visited www.cybergoat.com? There is an email list group on yahoo devoted to LaManchas: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lamanchatalk/join

NICE bloodlines! You might want to try joining the la mancha talk list at yahoo groups. (I think that is right)

Just to clear one thing. HES is herd evaluation service that Harvey Considine does and actually is not on paperwork, this is something the breeder added for your/their benefit. Harvey's scores are traditionally higher than LA Lineral Appraisal scores. A very nice animal on the sire side, weak on the dam side though a little far back on the paperwork to do much good does have my favorite Lamancha bloodlines, Yazz. Vicki

Thanks everyone for the info. I finally got the rest of the pedigree too, the dam (TWOSON EZ CASSIDY) out of Dream Goats LT Veronica, out of Dream Goats AP Brodie by *B South Fork B1 Lightning. I had no idea as to those other things.Say, what does + or ++ before *B mean???
