The previous post about the animated movie 'Light Years' got me thinking about another animated movie a saw as a child whose name I can't remember. It involved a young girl (i believe) in a sort of post-apocolyptic setting. She would often reminisce about hearing and or seeing whales, (i think)). There were alse various kinds of gigantic insects. Ummm, yeah. Any ideas as to what im talking about? I'm dying to figure out what the name of it was and possibly find a copy. Could someone at least point me in the direction of an extensive online catalogue of animated sci-fi/fantasy movies?

I'm positive that the anime your talking about is "Nausicaa" released in America as "Warriors of the Wind." The American release was chopped to all hell though to the point that the creators say that you should completely discount that version of the film. To my knowledge no other version has been released in America. This is funny because I saw this movie also as a kid and can only remember bits and pieces of it. What I did see scared the crap out of me at time (I was around 7 I think). I vivdly remember the part when Nausicaa is trying to stop on of the insects from crawling into a pool of acid and burns herself. It all seemed very dark and desperate to me at the time.

I've read the first graphic novel which the movie was based on by Hayao Miyazaki (who is also the man behind Totoro, Princess Monoke, and many other classics) and it's nothing short of brillant. There are three novels in all which I'll have to get my hands on at some point.

thank you very much, jack. nausicaa is the movie i was referring to. i'm so happy to finally have that mystery solved. it was one of the most memorable and influential movies from my childhood.
