cpu/motherboard compatability

greenspun.com : LUSENET : A One Forum : One Thread

Hi! I am considering buying the AMD K7 Thunderbird 1.333GHz CPU (266MHz DDR, Socket A, 256k Cache), and would like to know which is the best motherboard currently available to support this processor.

Thanks for your help!

Mike

In my opinion it is the Gigabyte GA-7DX, a top quality board.

if you have a Sound Blaster or any other Creative Sound Card and a GeForce card i would NOT buy the Gigabyte because of the VIA 686B south bridge chipset! VIA chipsets have so many problems! if you do buy one u will have to download about 4 files from the internet to correct them!

EVERYONE is waiting for the NEW SiS chipset! we are all planning to move to it! VIA chipsets are full of bugs and performance and compatiblity is rubbish! (Editors note: After a little research it seems that Alex is overstating the case a little the Via KT266 Chipset initialy had some problems although current revisions seem to perform well enough. The Gigabyte reference boards were within 3% of the SiS 735 Reference boards accordng to Tom's Hardware. If you desperately want a SiS chipset board, the new GA-7SDX has the SiS 735 chipset and will be available within two weeks.)
