If they become citizens they will be able to get at least minimum wage and not work for the scraps they do now. That means the country will need to let in millions more illegals for industries to take advantage of at wages no American Citizen would work for. But will the administration realize this? Nope. They are just planning for the elections in 2002, trying to gather votes. I guess they figure if Bush will give them citizenship they will be able to and want to vote for the people he wants in office. There is no way they will pick up any new members of congress with all of the things they have done since the election, so they have to try every thing they can to get votes.

Charlie, how long has it been since you lived in NYC? Quite a while, if I'm not mistaken. Well, let me tell you a little first- hand story about what was once one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in NYC - Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. I know you're familiar with this neighborhood.

When I left on February 22, 2000, parts of it had become "new immigrant slums". I wish I was exaggerating, but I'm not. Beautiful, tree-lined streets had become littered with trash (with a good portion of the -- VERY HEALTHY -- trees cut down). I used to stand in line in the supermarket next to women dripping in diamonds and wearing $10,000 fur coats -- and paying with food stamps. Scores of little rugrats were (and probably still are) allowed to run screaming (literally!) through the streets at all hours of the day and night. (These people lined up at the welfare office regularly.)

And God help you if you complained to them about their little "darlings".

Then there's the Russian mob. Let's talk about them for a minute. In my particular neighborhood (border of Bay Ridge/Dyker Heights), they've moved in in droves. One night, I had just left my friends at the local pub (corner of the block on which I used to live). I mean, it was probably ten minutes after I had left. Two stark naked, bleeding and obviously badly beaten women ran screaming into the pub, begging someone to call the police. Seems they had just been raped and beaten by a couple of Russian guys in an apartment right across the street. How they managed to get away is a mystery.

But they were the lucky ones. Day after day there would be news stories of this one and that one found dead (in a most horrible fashion) because of these people. And they don't care who they kill.

I used to have a beach club membership in Sea Gate. One summer, we found out that they were closing the Brighton Beach Baths (another beach club) and the owners of Sea Gate had invited those members for a "look-see". By noon, the ladies room was unusable because of the filth (I can only imagine what the men's room was like). The ocean was being used as a bath tub (well, it WAS Saturday). There was garbage strewn all over the sand and all near the cabanas. The little snack bar -- well, it's early; I can't even talk about that.

Do you want to talk about percentages of frivolous lawsuits in NYC? Want to guess who leads the pack in these? If you said "New Immigrants", congratulations; you're a winner. Hell, they don't have to work. They'll just SUE. (My brother was sued by one for an accident that SHE caused. But HIS insurance wound up paying, and his rates went through the roof. She had a "back injury", you see. Had been in the U.S. about two months.)

I don't see a need to talk about the Asian gangs either, who are more lethal, more "careless" and quite a bit more dangerous than even the Russians.

The American Dream? I just don't think so.

I have no problem with a controlled immigration policy that is based on such radical concepts as "can you be a contributing member of society". But that isn't what we have now. I have a friend who was working here; he's from Canada. He got laid off recently. INS told him he couldn't work here any longer because he was working outside the field for which he's qualified (he's an English teacher, but he was working in IT). A CONTRIBUTING (TAX-PAYING) MEMBER OF SOCIETY, and they want to turn him out. But the drain-on-the-economy scumbags they'll let stay. And you don't see a disconnect there? LOL.

Don't you dare claim to understand things to which you aren't privy any longer. I'm sure from the safety of your well-manicured suburb, it's very easy for you to talk about a liberal American immigration policy. Take a walk in someone else's shoes before you judge.

If the hispanics were so bad: explain Miami. If the Mexicans were so terrible, explain San Antonio now one of the hottest corp. relo cities.

Meanwhile, New Orleans once a jewell of civility has decayed without any substantial shifts of demographics.

Sorry, don't care. Bay Ridge has been "going down" since the mid-50s when more and more upscales moved to the LI even NJ burbs in "white flight". Same in Jackson Hts., Queens. There was reverse flight to Manhattan and yuppies even started colonizing the Alphabet streets.

Meanwhile, Boston turned itself from a soot covered ugly thing in the 50s to something much better now as did Pittsburg.

Philadelphia did not. You can't point to any influx of one particular minority or several and claim they destroy as city. Because in Phily it was pretty much status quo. Those familiar with Phily know about the ethnic enclaves where the Poles dare not cross into the Slavic areas and the Irish had better stay out of every place.

Bay Ridge was STILL a beautiful neighborhood in the 1970s -- and even into the 1980s. At the time, it was predominantly Irish and Scandinavian, with a "smattering" of Italian. Like the immigrants of a 100 years ago, they knew the value of "The American Dream". They knew how LUCKY they were to be here. They WANTED to become Americans. They WANTED to contribute to American society.

Hi, this is your fellow illegial immigrant speaking to you. :) I went to the University of Kansas, arriving from Hong Kong in 1996. As some of you more informed have gathered the .com slump has echoed its effects around the world. My tuition was cut short, parents have to send two more of my siblings through college, so I didn't even get a plane ticket from them to go home. (No we didn't have a falling out, I thought I can make it, and I was right.)

I allowed myself to be stranded here so I can allow myself to become familiar with the less priviledged walk of life. I can't, in retrospect, be at all regretful about my decision. Sure, I'm a unix geek and no one is willing to pay cash for any programming of any sort. The same applys to all walks of IT industry, unless it's small > 500 dollars of contractal work. The fact that I work with a bunch of university graduates from the most prestigous universities in china waiting tables is somewhat ludicrous, but hey, this is american government for you.

I too love this country, I came here with the greatest amount of skepticism, and found myself happier than I could possibly imagine. The overwhelming crowd of nay sayers against amnesty have their diverse reasons, and I have to agree with you. Bush's decision to let 3 million supposedly unskilled workers from mexico to be pardoned is well, seemingly ill-informed. This discussion has happened before in Hong Kong dealing with Vietnamese and Mainland china illegals as well. So yes, I do see where you are coming from.

But check this out on INS's policy on supposedly skilled workers like me... In order for me to get just an H1B (a work visa for the professionally skilled), I need a degree. For every year I am lacking in the degree, I need 3 years of real world working experience to make that up. And somehow I need to have references, affidavits from all the previous companies I have worked for. Then the company who wishes to hire me has to plunk down 3+ grand, I have to throw down another 2 for lawyer charges to do all the paper work. That's just a work visa. Nevermind none of the americans here can take a couple of microsoft certs for a few hundred dollars and get a similar job as I could, nevermind they can stay at the job indefinitely for as long as the company employs them, whilst I only have 6 years. What really fucking bugs the shit out of me, is that I come here, I've filed for taxes, (yes this gives them another route to find me, but it's one less law I broke whilst I am here), I'm obviously stuck here for finicial reasons, but there is not a route for a pardon for someone like me. I look at all my university friends who graduated, who can't compile a kernel, landing sysadmin jobs. I look at all the MS certified cabbage heads out there working at .coms, whilst I am proficient at most things and can't land a job. I look at my best friend in college who got an undergraduate research position with me whilst we were in school developing stuff for linux and freebsd, getting laid off and being sent home, whilst some vb idiot writes more bug-ridden propeitary shit for MS-sql server... catch my drift anyone ?

To those who think that by closing down borders properly they will fare a lower number in the II headcount, you are dead wrong. Illegial Immigrants are here to stay, I've seen them come and go from the restaurants I worked at, and let me let you all in on a little insight.

Most illegial immigrants from anywhere aside from Mexico do not come in through a boat or by land. They come in through a plane. Forged passports, or stolen passports with modified photographs, are easy to find. Not all countries' citizens need a visa to enter the United States on as a tourist, so the obvious route would be to go through canada. They come through detroit or whatever backroad, make a phone call to one of the many employment agencies that cater to people of their status, and the next day they are on a plane to some far off part of the US with a job. So no, you can't challenge a passport from another country with people who don't need a visa to enter. There is just no central authority to challenge the request, unless you have a direct line to _every_ foreign consolate/embassy, and they have all their citizens' pictures on file, and they are willing to share that with the US government. In other words, not going to happen.

The fact of the matter is that implementing idealogical strategies to curb numbers and hinder their activities in this country is flat out impossible. Airlines and bus companies do not have a direct link to any form of ssn/dmv/passport database, so they cannot be part of any domestic strategy to slow or hinder illegial immigrants travelling within the country. (Well if this was implemented, a ferry industry of convoys loaded with IIs would be established in a matter of days.)

So far I've discussed how people come into the country, how they get around, and how they get jobs. Let me indulge you in the little details of actually working in a chinese restaurant, with a supposedly fair minded boss.

I work 12 hours a day, from opening to close. Some of my collegues work 6 days a week. They make a lot of money, but a lot of that money goes to my pharmacy friends who provide them with non-addictive painkillers. For someone like me who has had diagnosed arithritis in the knees for the last 12 years or so, I can only say that working 42 hours back to back is a blessing. (that's 3 and a half days for those of you less mathematically inclined.) Tomorrow, around 3ish, I'll walk 45 minutes to work. I own a car, but since my DL has expired, I can't drive it. I can get a new one from applying a state ID, then use the state ID to garner a new DL... but the DMV is a 4 hour walk from where I live. Winter is coming up, need to go shopping at the thrift store again.

I get paid, a total of 10 dollars a day for wages. No joke, 10 fucking dollars a day for 12 hours of work. I come home with 120-130 if the day is good, but I assure you it's not easy work. The restaurant I work at happens to be owned by four different, unrelated people, and they are some rather stingy people (save one, who offers to drive me home every day I work. He's a good man.)

To those of you who think that not granting amnesty would discourage greater insurgances of bodies being transported over the border, you are also dead wrong. My collegues who work full time make 2700 dollars a month, TAX-FREE. (that's 6 days a week, 12 hours a day). These people have mouths to feed back home, they have families, domestic partners, children to give food to, and the best way they can do it is to come here and provide. You see, some of you here probably went to good schools on scholarships, some of you might have even managed to yank yourself out of the very bottoms of society and made a career of doing something fruitful. At china, this is not the case, in Hong Kong, this is mostly not the case. (It is a free market economy, but the rich only get richer, and well you know what happens to the less priviledged.) In Hong Kong, the equavlent of the English GCSEs are so demanding that they are designed to FLUNK a large percentage of the populus coming out of grade 11 (for you unaffliated with these exams gcses are a bunch of tests distributed to 17 year old teenagers which will decide the course of their lives). So these kids don't even get to go through the last two years of secondary education at a half decent school, they are thrusted upon the job market with no skills whatsoever. (You can go to trade schools, but believe me the outlook for those graduates are just as bleak. You're better off driving a taxi. ) I can only say from 2nd hand knowledge that the percentage of flunkies in 3rd world countries are even higher. And why is this ? these countries have too many people, and most of these people, don't pay enough taxes to matter. So governments there, like the government here, cater to the rich, and well, you know what happens to the poor. However poor these people they may be, they also have to provide for their immediate family. Just because this country has an over-generous unemployment and retirement benefits that are only rivaled by the most socialist countries in europe, doesn't mean that such is the case for the rest of the world. Mothers of these people generally have approached retirement age, some of these IIs have kids, and these immigrants want to garner enough money to send them to good schools, so their children don't have to go through the same route as they did. This isn't an idealogical rant, my collegues think that way, all of them did. They are their families food-bearer whilst being detached half the world away from them. Unfortunately few americans at similar circumstances have exhibted such feverent ideals towards family.

A general amnesty that will pardon all illegial immigrants will at least give them rights to be paid minimum wages. They will be entitiled to work in a medically insured envirnoment. They can get holidays, and god-forbid, OVERTIME. The only party that is fucked here are the companies that hired these illegial immigrants. Now there will be no more corners cut, because the workers know they have rights. So no, if the son of that sqweaky voiced ex-cia-head-honcho dumbfuck idiot decides to let this happen, it's not because he wants to buy a few votes. It's because that god-forbid, that twit in the big chair has finally done something right after bombing the shit out of afganistan and cutting family planning aid to the rest of the world.

But no, he just wants to grant it to mexicans... eiyah...

So you see my frustration... I can get a green card doing either getting married, or getting sponsored by a company who wants to employ me. Hopefully this can add to some insight on your debate, maybe my rant was worthwhile after all.
