Building a nightcrawler breeding bed (Vermiculture (worms))

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Found some old plastic cover signs ( the kind a business puts over the long floresent tubes in shopping centers) in a dump. "welded" the seams using methyl ethyl ketone, cleaned them well and aerated them with a couple of 1/16 bits. Buried this 7 x 4 x 4 foot box, added feed and grass and peat bedding and 4 boxes of crawlers. Covered it with another plastic sign with pvc vent pipes going down in the bin and clamped to the sides of the box with welding clamps and covered with dirt to lower the heat. I figure this should keep a cool enough temperature to keep the crawlers happy and can open it up and dig em up when we want to get some bait.

Jay, is there a way to add moisture or a need to? Also, how do you keep tham over winter? Do you get snow or ground freezing in N Al?

Our winters are nominal (25 to 40) with a few weeks extremely cold. I figure on using forced air ventilation and a layer of manure for the worse of the cold month. Plus 4 ft down should be deep enough for them to go into safe hybernation until spring when I need em for bait sales.
