Fire erupts at refinery Daily PressPublished: Saturday, July 28, 2001
YORK - Clouds of black smoke were visible for miles Friday evening after a blaze erupted at the BP Amoco oil refinery, fire officials said.
York County fire fighters were dispatched about 7:45 p.m. when the refinery's fire crew called them for assistance, Assistant Fire Chief Michael Player said.
BP Amoco Public Information Officer Aretha Preston said the fire at a crude unit, where crude oil is processed, was extinguished in about 20 minutes. She said a preliminary investigation showed that crude oil may have sprayed and ignited the fire. However, Preston said a more thorough investigation will be conducted.
No one was injured.
Friday's fire was the second blaze to strike the refinery in the last several weeks.
A June 6 fire at a gas processing unit caused explosions that were felt a mile away as flames rose more than 60 feet in the air.***
