State Quarter Lovin'

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MATH Plus One : One Thread

I think the state quarters count as a pop culture subject. Especially since there is not yet a subject for "Dorks."

Do you collect them? Do you squeal in delight when your friend gives you North Carolina? Do you still think your state got the blandest quarter imaginable? (Georgia. State outline. Peach. Duh. We're not even the biggest peach-producer anymore.)

Get down with your fifth grade social studies self. Speak out.

WG, I like the Georgia one. I like how the peach looks like a cute butt. The Jersey one is so boring, I can't even remember what's on it. Is it Washington crossing the Delaware? Bah. My favourite from a while back is the Connecticut one. I love that big oak tree. Living in Canada has been hell for the quarter-collecting geek within, but my baby sister has been collecting them for me in my absence.

The Connecticut tree does rock. I'm also fond of Cesar Rodney, if only because that quarter raised the question, who the $%@#$ is Cesar Rodney?

I wish Button Gwinnett had been on ours, just for the name.

All I know is that the State of Ohio had to make several revisions before the Mint (or whoever, I'm guessing the mint) would accept the design.

I guess the peeps in charge didn't think the original was Ohio-y enough or something.

yall are some geeks.

hee-hee.

I am a proud geek.

Hannah, what is the Ohio quarter? Lawrence (a Worthington native) was bitching about how the Wright Brothers should be on the OH quarter, not the NC quarter.

-- Anonymous, August 02, 2001

Indeed they should. All the development was done in OH they just went to NC to test. Mother-fucking NCers, all stealing our heritage and shit.

Huh, I didn't know I had Ohio pride. I need to go find some alcohol now, scuse me.

Maryland's quarter is a tower of some kind. Or a cupola. Or something. I'm not too thrilled about it, but Connecticut is an adopted state of mine, and I looooove that oak tree.

My mother has gone a little nuts with this whole concept. She's planning to collect five of each state--one quarter for each of her children, her husband, and herself--and give us our collections when they're complete. Knowing my mom, she'll turn it into a bizarre little Gifting Ceremony: "Children, I have toiled these long years to present you with... $12.50 in change."

Maryland has a dome of the state capital building.

I like it, since I grew up near Annapolis.

Shhh...here's a secret...The NC Quarters are misprinted. They read First Flight and should read First in Flight. I'm not sure, but I think they are going to re-mint them correctly. Maybe we should hang on to these, they might be worth 27 cents in 100 years.

All right! Maryland in the House!

I liked the Maryland quarter from the get-go, but a friend of mine who's big in the State Republican Party hated it. He went on and on about how it should be of something else -- I forget what. I was like, "Dude, it's a quarter. People will look at it for two seconds, then plop it into the coke machine or the clothes dryer. Don't give yourself an ulcer."

The Ohio one comes in out is 2002, I think? I have no idea what's on it. Maybe a buckeye tree or something.

I think there are OH license plates that say fathers of flight, or something like that. So maybe it does have something to do with the Wrights.

Can you tell I don't care much about Ohio? The only one I'll want to have is Texas, but that one probably doesn't come out for about 5 more years.

Here's the schedule. Texas is due out in '04.

I'm in love with the Vermont quarter. Maple syrup for FREEDOM!

I knew you'd have a schedule.

That killed me.

I can't wait for Alabama's. I'm going to get a hundred of them and... well... by myself a tank of gas? I don't know.

Oh, just because I know how to type http://www.usmint.gov, that makes me the Dorkiest Dorkity Dork of Dorkville. Hmmph. This from the same girl who told my guestbook that she loved me.

Well, my state quarter can beat up your state quarter.

You guys want to see the Dorkity Dork of Dorkville? Look at the hostility this guy's got over the Indiana state quarter:

oh the angst!

I hope he gets counseling before the year 2002. Or wins the lottery.

Oh crap. That didn't work. Anyway here's what Creepy Von Freakerton had to say:

"When I saw that the Mint was doing this 50 State Quarter thing, I spent about 150 hours designing quarters in the hope that I could come up with something to ensure that, even if one of my designs wasn't selected, at least we'd have one that was better than all of them. Well, out of the 3700 or so designs that were received by the Indiana Arts Commission, 17 semi-finalists were selected, and two of my designs (Covered Bridge and First State Capitol) were among those 17. Now, none of my designs made the cuts after that, so you could say that everything on this page is sour grapes. Well, you'd be wrong. Out of the four designs that are now left for submission to the US Mint, two are very good (even though they're illegal), and I would be proud to have them represent my home state on a quarter. But, my Governor had the nerve to select as one of the other two a drawing of an Indian done by a fourth-grader, that got none of the vote when the designs were put up on the State's web page for voting. Putting an Indian on our coin is an absolutely stupid thing to do, and for the governor to say that he liked the historical significance of it is political appeasement of feel-good white-hating minority ennoblers. In other words, bullshit. This little kid who came up with this piece of crap design must have a dad with some power, because I guarantee you if that thing makes it into coinage, I'll make it my life's mission to destroy every quarter I ever see for the rest of my life, to get the damn things out of circulation. I WILL get them all, too."
