KUWAIT BRACES FOR IRAQI ATTACKABU DHABI [MENL] -- Kuwait has raised concern that Iraq will launch an attack to mark the anniversary of Baghdad's invasion of the sheikdom in 1990.
Kuwaiti officials said Iraq has escalated tensions in the region and is believed to have tried to smuggle insurgents in the sheikdom. Iraq has warned of what it termed was an armed opposition group operating in Kuwait.
"We have started to fear terrorist operations by the Iraqi regime," Information Minister Ahmed Fahd Al Ahmed said.
The minister said Iraq could be also smuggling weapons in the sheikdom. The anniversary of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait takes place on Thursday.
For its part, Baghdad said Kuwait was helping Britain and the United States in enforcing the no-fly zones in northern and southern Iraq. The Saddam regime said it is closely monitoring Kuwaiti air space.
"Iraq has radars and intelligence systems which provide it with precise data on the bases for the planes their number, the type of planes and even the names and ranks of the pilots," the official A-Thawra daily said.

That's all we need. It was the 1990 invasion of Kuwait by Iraq in 1990 that pushed oil prices over $40 a barrel, which pushed us into the last recession -- 1990-1991.
