PAL XL1, HOW TO MAKE COPIES FOR NTSC VIEWERSgreenspun.com : LUSENET : Shooting DV Films : One Thread |
Hi, I'm new to the DV format. I'm thinking about purchasing a Canon XL1S when it comes out. The only confusions I have is whether if I should by a PAL version or not. I will mainly use it here in the U.S. but want the better resolutions. My question is, once I shoot in PAL, can I still capture with Premiere and export my movie directly to a NTSC deck for NTSC viewing, is that possible? Thank you so much in advance.Sid Tran

Hey Sid, If you're going to have it for NTSC viewing, then you will have to go somewhere and have that PAL converted to NTSC. The problem there is, the conversion will take away from all that nice resolution and will have you thinking I should've shot NTSC in the first place and save me some bucks... Unless you're planning to lay it down on 35mm, then that's a whole other animal.

Well, you can always directly burn it to a DvD or Video CD. Your resolution will take a hit (althought I don't think there is much of a difference sence I believe MiniDV only holds 530lines or REZ) Anyways, just think digital and you'll have no problem. Just don't expect it to look like gone with the Wind. I shoot for a FILM LOOK with my PAL baby and the pitfalls of NTSC I make work to my advantage. Film is a 4k resolution that transfers to video and still looks damn good on DvD...
