Ever tried the under sink water filter from lowes?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Freedom! self reliance : One Thread

The pipeline did some blasting and relocating of their main line. Since then our water has a kinda metal aftertaste (to me). Was wondering if those $25 filters worked or not?

That's actually the filter that we have! It works fine for us although if I could afford it, I would probably buy something better. I would love to have a distiller but...... We have been perfectly happy with the Lowe's filter.

Deena, I have a distiller. We bought it used for $10 at a flea market and it works great but since I've read that distilled water leaches the minerals from your body, I quit using it. When I found out I had severe osteoporosis I couldn't help but wonder if the distiller played a part in that. I would urge you to read about them more before you get one. Yes, they do give you probably the purest water you can get but the mineral part worries me. I think the under the sink filters are better than nothing if you keep the filters changed. A dirty filter can do more harm than good. We use an in- line filter now and while I don't think they are the best either, at least I know my calcium isn't being leached out of my body!

It is exactly the water filter our customers have installed. Our business takes care of changing out the filters for a group of older women in our town. I have no idea what the black stuff all over the filters is, but thank goodness it isn't in their water! I think they do a good job, but you would want to know what is in your water, water samples are pretty cheap. Ours is iron ore, we have a swimming pool filter on our well before the house. Works great. Vicki

I'm 90% sure ours is also iron. The high pressure switch is starting to show signs of rust. The company that installed our pump said he was 100% sure it was iron. seems to be a common problem in rural areas.

Our water does not leave any discoloration on clothes it just has that "taste". My wife has overcome her reaction to it and continues to drink the water. Me and the 7 year old takes a little cool aid with it. LOL

Reading back on this a ways, wanted to add that the effects of a water filter on your mineral nutrition is very, very, very negligible. Human beings don't get more than 1% of their minerals from their water, and never have...
