Setting the film speed

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

Hi, I got myself a brand new m6ttl a couple of days ago; I have been used to an old m4 before. I was wondering if it is really necessary to set the film speed using the diall at the back of the m6 body. I know that it's useful when you operate a flash, but what about other situations? Thanks. Zacharie.

Well, if you wish to use the built-in lightmeter (red diodes in the viewfinder) it might help to set the correct speed... ;o)

Zach...we all know the incredible euphoria of a new Leica in hand, but if you can possibly, force yourself to sit down and go through the owner's manual. There are only one or two things changed since your M4, but this is one of them ;>)

Set the film speep dial and the meter will give you appropriate readings for your film. Otherwise it doesn't matter if you don't use the meter.

Many people are collectors so of course if you don't intent to load batteries or film into the camera then this is a moot point. :-)

If all else fails, "Read Instructions". Although the M6 is a very good device, it is a generation behind in that it does not have DX filmspeed coding. it is one of the things the Leica folks think a competant photograopher can handle him/herself, and they are right. It is easy to do and is a good reminer of what film is in the camera, but not as helpful as the little window in some other cameras.

Have fun
