When will it happen?

Reading the thread on malls got me thinking.

I've read some science fiction stories about self contained communities in a building.

has the time come for this concept to become a reality?

Towns and cities provided people with a place to have everything in one area, They then moved into the suburbs to get away from then.

My idea is simular to little neighborhoods in New York. But in one building.

A buliding would house a "mall" all consumer stores in one area (for convenience), schools, theatres, Doctors, health clubs, business offices, child care centers, places of worship all on one sprawling building. It sure would help solve the transportation problems that exist today.

>Cherri, I believe Montreal has an underground city much as you describe. Also, Edmonton has a mega-mall which contains everything from an amusement park complete with roller coaster, ice rink where the Oilers hold practices, doctor's offices, place of worship, child care center, etc.

Anybody know how many thousands of tons of food must be shipped into NYC every day? Just curious.

I like to get out of the house once in a while.

Unk, Me too. For those who would like to ahve all of their amenities in close proximity it would be ok, especially if we need to prepare people to live in space. A few generations and they would be able to handle long space flights, or life in space stations. There would be the benifit of vacations in the country, forest, seashore. The people who wouldn't like to live like that would be able to live where they wanted, in less crowds and lower polution. It would be kind of neet if there were gardens for the inhabatents of the building(s). I guess New York City has neighborhoods that have naturally have everything you need within walking distance, and public transportation for going outside.

We were OK here in Seattle, until Microsoft showed up and all these people wanted to live in the "country" and drive to work. Now it is faster to ride a bike then drive anywhere. Most cars have just the driver in them, they refuse to carpool or use public transit. Preferring to let the other person do it.

I thinnk there are High rises in Florida that cater to senior citizens which have most of the necessities contained with-in. Grocery stores, medical clinics, etc.
