BA to cut further 8,000 jobs - paper

Airline seeks to slash overheads by £300 million By Friedel Rother, FTMarketWatch.com 2:45:00 PM BST Sep 9, 2001 LONDON (FTMW) - British Airways [UK:BAY] [US:BAB] is planning to cut up to 8,000 jobs over the next three years as it attempts to cut costs, the Sunday Times reported. The airline's chief executive, Rod Eddington, is said to be considering a further 10 to 15 percent reduction in its 58,000 strong workforce, the paper said.

On Wednesday, BA said it would lay-off 1,800 people and looking at other significant cost cutting measures, after its August traffic figures showed a double-digit fall. The news caused a 2 percent drop in the share price as investors feared that the airline will report a poor second quarter result. The September quarter is traditionally BA's most profitable period of the year. See more on BA job cuts

The airline wouldn't comment on the move, but did tell the Sunday Times that more jobs would be lost after the financial year ends in March, 2002.

Overhead cuts

The paper also quoted BA's head of investor relations, George Stinnes, who pointed out that BA had slashed 25 percent of its capacity but just 3 percent of jobs. He said that although job cuts would not necessarily match declines in capacity, 3 percent was quite small by comparison.

Meanwhile, an article in the Observer says that BA is looking to reduce its overhead by £300 million this year and next year. The paper also claims that BA has plans to cancel various short and long-haul routes as well as ground five jumbo jets.

Analyst reports have helped to set the stage for more cutbacks at BA. Deutsche Bank and HSBC downgraded their ratings on the airline last week while several others, including Morgan Stanley and Lehman Brothers significantly reduced their 2002 pre-tax profit estimates. See more on analyst cuts to BA

However, the gloomy outlook may not stop BA's pilots from seeking a pay rise. The Sunday Business quoted airline sources saying that the pilots' union was ready to ask for salary increases in the range of 7 percent next month.
